just rough details needed or confirm please
for a tg to get a uk passport:
marry uk guy legally
then apply for a uk visa
then have to live in uk for 3 yrs
then can apply for a uk passport / citizenship
is that roughly how it works and time scales?
just going off what I have read on uk www
just wandered if anyone can just give a yes / no to the above approx timescales?

Google is your friend. I found lots of sites that talk about UK immigration requirements.
Here is one:

"Requirements for naturalisation if you are married to or the civil partner of a British citizen
In order to demonstrate the residential requirements for naturalisation you need to:
* have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least three years (this is known as the residential qualifying period) ; and
* have been present in the United Kingdom three years before the date of your application; and
* have not spent more than 270 days outside the United Kingdom during the three-year period; and
* have not spend more than 90 days outside the United Kingdom in the last 12 months of the three-year period; and
* have not been in breach of the immigration rules at any stage during the three-year period."

The requirements are not as clearly listed as the first one cited, but it is probably more "official".
BTW, an English relative of mine said that he has heard that there is a movement to increase the 3 years required if you are married to a British citizen to 5 years - but I have seen nothing to indicate that.
And, I agree with loco - a prenup (in Thai) is a very good step.

doing some homework for a lazy friend
if I introduce him / her to this site, it might get me into trouble
so I said I would "phone a friend"
ok thanks fellas yes seems they cant live in thailand and get the passport, even if married for 3-5 yrs
u have to actually LIVE in uk for 3-5 years and not just be married? is that right??
u cant just marry and get the redbook after 3 yrs
it involves moving there (if they even give her a visa)

The best advice you will ever get.... they start off sweet and end up like a barrel of vinegar.
As soon as they get to the UK, they change and almost guaranteed after 10 years, they will not be married to the poor sap who spent all his time and money and sanity getting her over here in the first place - no - they will move on to richer and better pastures.

are we all in agreement of sorts that the only way to get the passport once married is through actually physically living in the uk for 3-5 years?
no exceptions?
i mean if u legally marry then live in thailand or hongkong for 3-5 years would they issue british passport then
or it HAS to be ONLY from living in uk
which obviously means applying for a uk visa first either as a wife or student or working
cos a tourist visa aint gonna work?
right?

That is correct.... it seems that with the new EU requirements that Brown agreed to along with the current economic troubles the visa/citizenship process has really been tightened up.
However that is the same worldwide.... for example I know of a Dutch dude who has been married to a Singaporean Woman for the last 15 years. They have been living in the EU since they were married and he never applied for a PR or a dependents pass.
Recently he lost his job in the EU and they want to return to Singapore as his wife has an HDB Apartment here. However all he can get is a Social Visa for 60 days since he is over 45 and neither one of them are currently employed.
My recommendation is the same in all of these cases.... get a fiancé visa before you marry and then haul her back to your country to get married.... if you take the time to go through the proper process she will be able to have free access to your country until she meets the requirements for citizenship  ...

Not sure I can help you with the time limits. Check the Home Office website, retiredintahoe gave a link.
But one thing you might want to consider is taking your TG to the UK on a fiance visa as your first step in that process. Then get married in the UK.
This is a gross generalisation, and there are exceptions I know to this, but:
* Of all the UK friends I know who are married to TGs, for the most part the marriages that have lasted are the ones where the TG lived in the UK for a time before they got married. So a fiance visa (or holiday visa if you can get one) is the way to go for that.
* Those marriages where they got married in Thailand & never went to the UK but remained in Thailand, are the ones that have run into difficulties.
Not sure why this should be. Maybe it means TGs are better at understanding our culture and changing their ways to suit us, than we are at understanding their culture and changing our ways to suit them?
