As to classical music in Thailand: Yundi Li had a piano recital recently and also Pletnev has been here.
I am also against close multi-miking, prefer a two mike setup. Some great RCA and Mercury recordings from the 50ies sound fine to me, especially on vinyl. My stuff is quite basic - I am a firm believer in good budget equipment such as the old Advent receiver and speaker, NAD 3020 amp etc. But I regret that I never bought the Quad electrostatic speakers...

quack..to judge from your style of arguing I don't think you would lower yourself to bother to discuss in an audio forum with a budget guy like me. You would certainly consider me a "moron". For many years I enjoyed listening from a 15w Advent receiver. Tom Holman had equipped it with a good phono preamp and it really sounded sweet to my humble ears. I have also listened to Quad electrostatics and enjoyed them tremendously, although their forte was transparency rather then dynamics. Not like from a matchbox to my ears.

I listen a lot to old pre-hifi recordings such as the late 1930ies or early 40ies recordings by Toscanini, Alfred Cortot, early 50ies Maria Callas and so on. Some of them are the most beautiful interpretations I have ever heard or probably ever will hear.
Also with this kind of music good equipment helps a lot but good budget stuff are mostly adequate.
Re a previous posting: I wouldn't attend a Mahler 3rd performance in Bangkok even with perfect miking - would sit and compare it to the magnificent Bernstein/NPO version from 1961, still unsurpassed in my view. Also good sounding by the way.

Lately I have rediscovered Bernstein as one of the truly great conductors, if however somewhat uneven. Apart from Mahler, his mid 80ies Mozart 40 and 41 symphonies with the VPO rivals and might surpass some of my other favourites among modern recordings such as Karajan, Britten, Szell.

The Copland Clarinet Concerto, Stanley Drucker soloist, Leonard Bernstein conducting, superb - cool and jazzy! It was dedicated to Benny Goodman, but he had technical problems with it - "you know, I'm just an ordinary jazz guy" he is quoted as saying.
No such problems for Stanley Drucker who joined the NYPO at the age of 19 or something. His 1965 recording of the incredibly difficult Carl Nielsen concerto is unsurpassed technically (but not musically).
