My last night in BKK in March my date (a real girl who dances at Fantasia in NEP) took me to Casanova and we had a blast. She danced on stage with the ladyboys and I watched and had "sanuk mak". The "girls" were very entertaining, though there were only a couple who could seriously pass for girls.
I'm completely straight and have never come close to any experimentation, but I've been friends with plenty of gay men and women, have been to several gay bars in the States, and I've always found them fun and a nice change of pace. Go in with an open mind and a relaxed attitude and you might actually enjoy yourself.
