Even the Wetherspoons are expensive in London !! There are some quite good ones. One near Tower Bridge. Shakespeares Head -Kingsway. Leicester Square not bad. The one oppsite the Salsa club not to bad either. But otherwise pubs in London charge about £2.80 for a pint of Guinness and £2.50 for a pint of real ale. Hops yeast and water !

'But otherwise pubs in London charge about £2.80 for a pint of Guinness' that seems rather cheap,Guinness is normally expensive anyway, but that sounds quite a good price, almost that in my local. last time i was in London i paid over £3 for a very poor bitter,it was disgusting, but the only one the Pub served.

Wetherspoons ought to be banned by law from calling its places 'pubs'. A travesty of all that is true and decent. But enough of these pathetic attempts to pass the time in the deserts of farangland... What makes a good bar? Well, what makes a good party? I'd say a good hostess - which in bar terms comes down to a good mamasan. She needs to run a happy ship and make sure the passengers are well taken care of. She should know when to leave well alone, and when to intervene with some suitable 'introductions'. Sometimes - not often enough - all this actually happens. When it does, it doesn't take all that much to light a fire in a BKK bar.

Good observation Arcadius... and I would add that a "happy" ship is also a "tight" ship, just like in the Royal Navy. While the crew may not always agree, discipline is a crucial element. In Thailand, the right blend of discipline and sanook is what will help the organization thrive.

Always been impressed with Rock Hard & Flash in Phuket. Both well run, reasonable prices and lots of quality TG's. Also the music is not toooo loud to interupt the trading!

To start the thread I used the word 'formula' Wetherspoons is a formula concept as is All Bar One. I spent many years in the Orange Tree in Richmond then it had a makeover. The 'All Bar One' formula' So did the White Swan by the river. I don't visit them any more coz if I want trendy I'll go All Bar One etc. The Old Ship, The Watermans's Arms, The White Cross and the Princes Head(all Richmond) all still retain their 'natural' pub feel. But it is a dying art. The Lord Moon on the Mall, The Moon on the Water Leicester Square , The Shakespeares Head in the Aldwych and The Liberty(something or other) in Tower Hill seem quite nice pubs to me. Unfortunately few Wetherspoons pubs have atmosphere although their prices for food and drink are reasonable. This huge chain(Wethers') is backed by money and influence so in no way compares to the small bars in Nana or Soi Cowboy all vying for the same trade. Personally I prefer Czech bottled beer- something to do with the yeast they use. Chang is just rice beer, Heiniken and Carlesburg never seem to taste like the original so I stick with Singha. The Bamboo bar has a German dark beer on tap but it tastes awful(like cough mixture). The Guinness offered in the various Irish bars is brewed in Malaysia and is 8% proof !! Double that of the real Liffy Liquid. Selling imported beers is usually too expensive when the local brands are available and Singha(PB) breweries in the Boon Rawd Road will always try and protect their patch. So an eclectic choice of beer seems out of the question. A good dress theme for the girls will sooner or later be copied by the larger bars so will any original show !! Music- well that is relative. I like jazz ,latin, blues and soul...funkier the better. But most of the bars play rock which is probably the audience. Yep gotta be a difficult job running one of those smaller bars. And yet some are successful ???

50% the right mix of girls. stunners, wild ones, horny ones, some older ones, funny ones, 1 or 2 fatties 20% remember your customers. give your regulars good attention, a bit stronger drinks, inform them about new girls, treat them as friends, I believe that is called managment. the girlsl will remember you anyway... 20% size, best is a 2 or 3 unit gogo, as most girls like to work in bigger, more anonymus bars, also it gives you a much better investment/profit ratio 10% good sound system, decent music, some oldies, top 50, some thai pop, a little rammstein location is not that important as long as you are in a zone. prices are unimportant as long as you are not more expensive then all the others. rtb.
