JR, very sorry to hear about your experience. ÝI'll be back in the states by October, or I'd be glad to accompany you to any of these places, if you had the slightest interest in patronizing them.

its sad to hear stories like this. one of the things im looking forward to most about travelling in asia is meeting as many different people as possible, not just tourists from britain, america or australia.

i didnt realise that race would be so big an issue in bangkok and its disappointing. i know from reading this forum that the area surrounding the grace hotel is mainly african or muslim and i look forward to going there as much as anywhere else in bangkok. would it be unwise to a white brit on his first time in bangkok to go there alone?

Although I don't condone discrimination, we all know that it is widespread in Thailand.

It used to be much worse around 10 years ago when many bars in Pattaya carried a sign:

'No Arabs in here .... they threat our girls badly'

Thais have a general opinion about certain nationalities (including but not limited to Indian, Africans, Germans) and it's hard to change that.

Furthermore, I see that nowadays some bars gather specifically for certain nationalities (Indian in Lolita Beer Bar, Africans in the bar next door ....). I am not sure why but it seems they rather spend time among themselves then in waterholes targetted at Caucasians ...

maybe a little beside the point but if there is this discrimination in bangkok, would it be much worse in smaller towns and islands, or in neighbouring countries with less tourists?

The reason why discrimination is so prevalent in BKK is because there are so many foreigners living in or visiting BKK. Once you get away from any of the larger cities you'll probably see a whole different attitude toward foreigners. Why? Because most of the people you'd meet have probably never seen a foreigner or "farang" before. Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý
Another thing you can probably expect is to be well fed, looked after, and treated with so much courtesy. 10% of that comes from the novelty of meeting their first farang. The other 90% of that .... well now you know one of the reasons why Thailand is called LoS ( Land of Smiles ). Peace

Thaiaficionado,

Thanks for the offer bro but I don't think I would spend my money and time in an establishment that would refuse me entry just because of my skin colour.

However it would be great to have a drink with you in an establishment that welcomes both of us, if we ever do meet up.

DrLove,

You mentioned that you did not know why people of a certain race mainly stayed at bars or establishments that catered to their particular race....well I suppose the fact that they may have been made to feel uncorfortable in certain places has driven them to stick to a select few places that won't turn them away.

Even though I am Indian born in Singapore I have never thought of myself as being solely Indian, even though this is part of my identity...I am just a person kike everybody else...I myself to do not stick to establishments that only cater to certain races as I feel that only limits my exposure and does nothing to widen my circle of friends or knowledge.

However I do understand why some people choose this avenue...we all wish racism was non-existent but this world is unfair and you play with hand you are dealt...

JR ,
I am an Indian ( not American Indian - BUT from the sub-continent ) and although I have not faced too much of discrimination in Thailand , I have had one or two experiences and I have learned to roll with the punches .
I have related this incident before and I apologise for the repitition - BUT I think that it is very relevant to this Thread :-
About a year ago on my first ( and last ) visit to Honolulu M.P. I selected a girl from the fish-bowl but when I went to the cashier to pay the papasan said that the girl did not want to service an Indian .
I smiled and asked the papasan if she would agree if I paid her a B2000 tip upfront .
You guessed it - she was down in a flash . But when she got to the cashiers desk I asked the papasan where the girl was from and he said Korat . I screwed up my face , said " I don't want to have sex with girls from Korat " , turned on my heel and walked out .
JR - in other words , don't let discrimination bother you . Just smile and patronise places that are not racist - and there are any number of places in Thailand and all over the world .
