Hey Finchy,
You say that bars like Country Road or the bars at the WS are not beer bars.
But you don’t give an explanation or a definition: what is a Beer Bar, please?
All these mentioned bars are beer bars, of course. They are classical beer bars!
They sell beers and beverages, some food (from a limited menu card) ; they amuse their guests with international pop music; some of them have billiard tables. And then there are the girls, womenz, wenches …
Here is a story about the New Square One Pub of the Welshman Taffy.
I was standing at one of the tables and had a drink with him.
I looked around and then I said to him:
“Taffy, where are all your beautiful girls from last November? I made so many pictures (color slides) of your pretty and charming creatures. But now it seems as if they are all gone? Where are they?”
Taffy’s face showed some grievance. He took me by the hand and we went to the pinboard at the wall where hundreds of photos were fixed. He pointed at the pictures of some girls I recognized at once. There were all the girls I was missing in the bar.
“They are all taken out of my bar and got married by farlangs!” shouted Taffy and there was a sad and disappointed sound in his voice with a mixture of anger and rage.
“I have lost 6 girls within some months. They are married now in America, Canada, Australia and even Germany. And they were the best looking girls of my bar, of course!”
Somewhat later he went on tour in that area of the Isaan, where his wife is from searching for new talents, for new girls working in his bar.

Hi Bakwahn,
I believe pjcobb was referring to the the old style bar beers, of the sort that are found on soi 7 and 8 in Pattaya, or at the places I mentioned earlier. These are small, basic, open sided bars and there are usually a number of them competing in a small area. For example the bars in the centre area of Nana Plaza would be bar beers.
I would classify Country Road or the WS bars simply as bars, not bar beers. They are proper buildings with a door etc.

I want to thank everyone for the replies. Finchy's got it... at least that's what I mean by "Bar Beer".
I just finished 5 days in Bangkok & sorry to say Bar Beers are bordering on extinct.
Soi Zero: sorry I just can't get past the location
Soi 22: more katoeys than girls, Hmmmm...
Nana: I've been here too long. As soon as you string 2 sentences together in Thai, the girls lose interest
I must say that thanks to the ridiculous new closing times, I had some excellent luck just sitting on Suhkumvit after midnight. But it's a long wait from 5pm...

When in Bangkok, I always visit a beer bar named Bus Stop in Soi 4 (close to Nana).
Nice atmosphare and friendly girls.
Some update on this bar and the girls working there?
