At the risk of inflaming matters further (and I must admit a temptation to let this lie), I have spoken to the people in the know in BKK again.
They tell me that the situation is as follows
Sex with under 13 - life imprisonment
Sex with under 15 - up to ten years + fine
Age of consent is 15 for Thai-Thai
Age of consent for Non Thai - Thai is 18
HOWEVER they are adamant that the above reflects ONLY a commited relationship (quite how that gets proven please dont ask). The age for consensual sex between a non Thai and a "prostitute" is 19.
I have NO idea why there is this "differential" or how it would actually be applied.
Chompoo - I for one DO respect your "input" and I think it IS important to get facts right here. if you see an earlier posting of mine you will know that a friend of mine had his hotel door kicked down by the boys in blue. he was with a girl whose is clealry showed she was over 19 - however fake id is easy to come by and rife, but thats another story.
However this board is to pass on information and experiences as we see them.
I pointed out that "general consensus", both here and on the internet says "18", but given that there ARE two conflicting bodies of thought I would still advise Bro's to err on the conservative. If one says 18 and one says 19 I know which one I would choose to opt for.
Whilst I appreciate that it is your choice I would not want to take your stance about "trying my luck in court" - not in Thailand anyway. Much as I love the country the justice system is not exactly stacked in your favour nor is it steeped in pragmatism.
One of the Bro's here used to have a "strap line" something like "if she looks 18 shes probably 16 etc etc" I think the best advice is to stick to those who "look" 25+ that way even the fake ids don't become a problem, and believ you me, a fake id will NOT be a decent defence should it come to the crunch!

Thank you for a polite and, as usual, well-reasoned response.
I WOULD quibble with a few points:
As Thais, like people everywhere, strive towards greater prosperity, a lot of so-called western values (actually they are common sense values, applicable to any society that seeks to enrich itself in a materialistic sense) are bound to be adopted.
I don't think this is even remotely the case in Thailand, especially the 'common sense' characterization. İDid Thais historically lack this common sense? İAnd what makes you assume that Thais are striving for your definition of 'greater prosperity'. İ"Fish in the rivers, rice in the fields" has ALWAYS been the Thai response to foreign (not Western, ok? Although India IS west of Thailand... ) musings on their lack of motivation.
Much can be said for the twin factors of Thai Buddhism, and lack of colonial influence, which place Thailand in a unique position politically, and socially. İThese tend to keep pressure toward the status quo, rather than adopting foreign values, even when it would APPEAR beneficial to do so. İThe popular backlash against the recent terrorist 'laws by decree', and the resentment toward the IMF are reasonable examples.
The Westernization you speak of is actually shallow, and even where it is arguably the deepest, in the farang P4P scene, it STILL takes a back seat to the national and cultural pride of the Thais. İThis is in SHARP contrast to colonial Asia, where a certain aspiration to be more like the former ruling class is evident.
Further, I find a certain 'prostitutes belong to the untouchables' tone in your posts that is loudest when you speak of a "better life". İThe ONLY better life anyone can have is to be better self-actualized. İAs long as a bigger TV, more cell phones, and gold are the goal, BGs will NEVER really have a better life. İBuddha said that the nature of desire is suffering.
I agree that the current nightlife crackdown, if it gets that far, could hurt the girls economically, and is really just a temporary facelift. İAnd, the corruption probe is likely to be half-hearted, since it extends FAR above the level which would tolerate real scrutiny. İBut the intent, by the big man, is to give the appearance that Thailand is 'fixin' to get ready to think about' joining the world economy.
That will happen when Thais go to school to learn how to DO something, rather than for the paper, and when the average Thai is no longer satisfied with "fish in the rivers, rice in the fields"...
I am surprised to be held up for trying to sound like an NGO in speaking of a "better life".

I don't deny that my style is direct and that I don't have a lot of patience with obnoxious idiots. However, at least I have the virtue of being correct most of the time. Being obnoxious and tenacious and wrong is something you have exclusive title to.

Anyway, I'll address this here as the last time I left I had to reply to a dozen PMs about why I was no longer posting.
I'll give you my opinion on most of the board members. The vast majority don't care to think seriously about this business/hobby and just come here to get info about it and bullshit about it. That's fine, I have no problem with them.
There are many people who do care to think about it, but most of them can't be bothered to wade through all of your bullshit and it is not important enough that they do. Your BS is superficially sweet, but any detailed analysis of why it doesn't hold up (and it often does not) becomes boring.
The fact is that anything other than superficial analysis of the bigger issues is boring, especially if you don't have an open mind and don't care to face reality. Either you just go over the same crap (misconceptions, faulty logic, bad data) a million times or you dig deep and break down all those obstacles to truly understand the problem.
If you just want to discuss whether hairless pussies are better, then by all means go ahead. I've never stepped into one of those discussions and told people what to think. But if you stand up with faulty data or logic, you should expect to get called on it. You make ridiculous indefensible statements and when called on them you lash out in a very petulant manner.
There are a few people who really care to look at some of the issues. However, a nightlife board such as this one will invariably contain enough trolls and people with grudges (such as yourself) so that any serious discussion gets side-tracked. It is difficult for me (and any of the many other people you harbor ill will toward) to respond to any post without you jumping all over it with the barest hint of a reason. This thread exmplifies that (as does the thread on Soi 33 barfines).
I have contributed to the board in many ways. Chatted about the nightlife (maybe even hairless pussies), cracked jokes back and forth, reported personal anecdotes, handed out factual information and trip reports, ... However, you don't see that because you don't want to look for it; you concentrate on only my analytical posts and your obnoxious presence and stunning disregard for logic and truth forces me to spend all my time just responding to you which ends up making those serious posts even more prominent.
Unlike you apparently, I don't need to get my kicks on the board. I have enough real friends to hang out and BS with. However, there are a shortage of people who can talk about Thai nightlife, bargirls, prostitution, difference between Thai and western women, ... in an adult, intelligent and informed manner. There are a few here, but not enough to make it worthwhile when the ratio of trolls is so high (and widely tolerated, nay encouraged). How long will those guys stand it? Already a few have become scarce or dropped completely, making the odds of intelligent conversation even less likely.
