I don't see what's so terribly wrong about Dodgy's statement, nor do I think it's moralistic. ÝIt's just HIS feelings about HIS interaction with the P4P scene in BKK.
Sure, he's conflicted, carrying a lot of baggage, but at least he admits it, and wants to find some way to deal with it.
As for the crackdown toning things down, I believe it will have the WRONG effect, i.e., placing restrictions on how the Thais conduct business. ÝThe REAL problem, as I have stated many times, is the quality (or lack of) of the FARANGS that have access to the scene.
Like it or not, there is a VAST difference between most expats, particularly those who have been in Thailand more than a year, and the 80% or so of this board, who have heard that it it easy to get laid in Thailand. ÝIt takes quite a bit of gumption, resourcefulness, and motivation to establish residence in Thailand, except for the idle rich, and a small minority of company-placed workers. ÝAnd, pre-internet, it took a LOT more initiative to get to Thailand than it does now.
Face it - Thailand has been discovered! ÝNot by intrepid sojourners, but by busboys, bus drivers, and various lazy dipshits. ÝNot that there aren't some deserving busboys/drivers out there, but it's all just too easy. ÝKind of like having an elevator to Mt. Everest.
The upshot? Bad behavior, lowering of the standards of common decency, overcrowding, and PUBLICITY. ÝAnd because we mostly ALL look alike, the publicity reflects badly on us all. ÝLack of respect for the culture, whether due to ignorance, or disregard, makes the experience worse for ALL of us.
Those who denigrate the Thais and their 'faults' should remember that they don't need or, in the larger sense, want us there. ÝThey were doing JUST fine before the GIs found Patpong, etc. ÝDon't like spending all day to accomplish something that would take an hour in the US? ÝGo home. ÝDon't like the lack of a 'straight' answer to a pointed question? Go home. ÝTired of P4P? Go home, and go to church.
As for Dodgy's dilemma - who among us can honestly say that they weren't confused/bewildered/hurt by their ambivalence at the wonder/tragedy of a beautiful making you feel like the only guly in the world, only to see her working the same magic on the next ATM she found?
Only those who knew about it beforehand, or the truly sociopathic. ÝNot many of the first kind about, and FAR too many of the second.
Someday somebody will paraphrase Yogi Berra:

This is the reason I travel 10,000 miles and pay $750USD to fly to Thailand. If one feels "guilty" comming here there are many family style places one can go. Orlando, Fl comes to mind.
Thailand was doing quite well before the GI's dicovered Patong. I disagree. Back in 1960 thru 1976 the US Goverment pumped billions of US buscks into the Thai infrastructure. LOS got a big jump with roads, bridges, airports etc.
In reality how many guys would travel this far to a country that's hot and sweaty if the payoff was not cheap women? I know I wouldn't.
I'm the sex tourist the deputy minister worned you about.

The whole NEP...Nana....Grace scene is a bit sleezier than I enjoy, but gotta admit that I love it!
Personally, some of the best times I had were kicking back in the Mango Tree having some Tom Yam Goong and listening to the traditional Thai music...flirting with the waitress practicing her English...stuff like that. OH and the night spent with PBD, Pinga, and BK at the out door restaurant on Ratchada...with our Piano girls. didn't get laid, but had a damn great time with that 100 lb lobster!

FWIW,
As a retired truck driver and sometimes I did drive a bus.
Usally I walk from the Majestic Suites to Annie's as I try and experience the kulture of LOS.
I'm able to seperate my behavior with children and with the BG P4P scene.
What I said about US investment in the 1960 thru 1976 is correct.
Haam when are you comming back to LOS would enjoy shooting the breeze with you sometime.

I agree with ABC that BKK, and indeed LOS, has a whole lot more to offer than just the p4p scene. ÝWith the nature of this forum we sometimes overlook that. ÝI think BKK, like Amsterdam, has room for both its sides (the naughty nightlife side and the cultural side).

Well I do (travel to LOS for a vacation that isnít p4p oriented) and would continue to do so, but I see the point youíre making. ÝIf for whatever reason the farang-p4p scene disappeared overnight, my guess is 90%plus of the non-residents in this very forum would be making alternative vacation plans.

Great point, and I wish it WOULD happen, which is one point I think Dodgy was trying to make. The other 10 % are welcome. Just MY pointo of view, of course...
As far as BigDUSA's post, it implies that Thailand has nothing ELSE to offer. I suppose that's true for "the sex tourist the deputy minister worned you about", but a few people (including you) feel differently.
Further, his statements about US 'help' from 1960 onward reflect HIS narrow view of their importance to Thailand. US self-interest is what was served, and while I wouldn't say that it wasn't helpful to Thailand, my ORIGINAL statement said that Thais were doing fine before the GIs discovered Patpong, i.e. P4P in Thailand.
The reason I think it was dumb is that it ignores the larger issue, and concentrates on BigD's SELF-interest, i.e., cheap P4P.
