Unlike the kind who like to cut to the chase. (And I suspect that includes a hell of a lot more than 80% of punters.)
You must be spending all your time in MPs. Only a small percentage of visitors to gogo bars and beer bars walk in, select a girl and walk straight out. The vast majority of serious customers hang out at the bar for a few drinks and often buy at least one LD before selecting a girl (if they do at all).
If the girls (and the bar) were not compensated by LDs you can be sure the bars would be overflowing with cheap-ass punters (not you,... specifically), who would enjoy their free company all night.
I'm sure you think BFs are a scam too. After all why should the bar charge you when it costs them absolutely nothing to let the girl go.
How do you expect bars to stay in business without these charges? I'm sure if they raised drink prices or charged an entrance fee you'd complain about that too. Basically you don't think these bars should stay in business and that everyone (other than deluded fools) should stay away. Of course, you're willing to drop by the bars and take advantage of all the punters who are subsidizing your experience.
I find the karaoke concept much more transparent and up front.
Yes it is more transparent. It is also much less flexible and inefficient. LDs allow the free market between bargirls and punters to thrive. If a girl wants to give you 5 minutes for her drink or 30, it's up to her. If you don't want to buy her friends another LD, that's up to you, but they are free to hang around if they want.
The "karaoke concept" is very rigid. It would be quite easy for me to call you a moron for paying such exorbitant fixed costs when you can find a nice bar where the girls are quite happy hanging out for a couple of drinks an hour or tell you that your presence must be so vile that you need to have the girl under a fixed contract so she doesn't ditch you (or start demanding more frequent LDs). But if I don't like the karaoke style I just don't go there and won't knock you for your preferences.
No more paying an exorbitant sum for a cola and having to understand, you poor ignorant tourist, that you're actually paying for her company.
Come on, the tourists are what makes the LD concept a necessity. Without LDs most tourists would have no clue that they should tip the girls at all. You'd rather the girl just demand 20 baht every ten minutes? You may like "transparent", but most tourists don't. Just as they don't want an explicit contract for sex (including how many times, what positions,...) when they pay the BF. If you want that, go to Amsterdam.

I agree with Griffin. I would not mind the smaller charges because it allows myself and the female more flexibility. I figure if you got skills and are a true player, then one lady drink can go a long..... long... way.
And isn't that what Thailand is all about? Having choices and not having to be too discerning.
And LD's are as Arcadius pointed out a way for the establishment to ensure that a patron does not monopolize a females time for nothing.
And isn't this the same type of concept at the strip bars in the U.S. You pay an entrance fee that gives up two drinks. They ensure that a parton does not go in and just watch and leave without spending some money.

I was also going to make that point. If I'm willing to pay the girl (and the bar) for her time and another guy is just taking up her time without compensating her then that is an inefficiency in the market. Although, if the bar is slow or the guy is good looking or charming enough to hold her interest then that's fine, up to her.

I do not like the discerning system at karaoke places. You do not get to choose the girl outright. A girl (or more if you want more than one) -that you didn't get to choose, comes and sits with you and after a few minutes -about 10 or 15- the mamasan comes to ask you if you are happy. If not the girl goes and then they bring a second girl.... and so on.
After 3 or 4, you start to feel the pressure. The mamamsan getting impatient that you do not like any. In some places they bring a bunch of girls from the beginning and parade them in front of you for you to make a selection... quickly.
Often each mamasan works with a specific set of girls. If you like a girl that is assigned to another mamasan then your mamasan has to go and ask her counterpart.
Way too annoying. Though karaoke bars are good for just going and having good silly fun with your Asian friends.

Sheesh! Obviously, a lot of you guys love the Soi 33 concept bars.
But your love clouds some of the excellent reasoning I've seen so far.
Let's start with Chumpoo, shall we?

Every bar in Thailand is filled with 'cheap ass' punters, and they outnumber the big spenders by quite a bit. Punters haggle even in places like Rivas and Spassos which proves that 'cheap ass' can be as much a state of mind as a state of wallet. Does that mean that the Soi 33 bars are frequented only by high rollers like yourselves? I don't think so.
My commments are not directed towards regulars or local expats who have their own reasons for going these bars, but towards those who look at the place and go:
WHAT THE FVCK AM I REALLY GETTING FOR MY MONEY HERE?
An ever-so-slightly better dressed/better looking class of girls resulting in overpriced drinks, overpriced lady drinks, overpriced barfines, and you're not even guaranteed a bang with the lady of choice. WTF?!
Bottom line: if they didn't resort to scams like these, directed at people with more money than brains, they'd be out of business in a flash.

Well, there are enough bars/discos that don't just survive, but thrive without levying such charges. This is not to say that they are cheap but it is a lot easier to justify the cost. CM2 is but one example, the soi 7 beer garden is another.
Now please, I am NOT asking everyone to drop the soi 33 bars and rush down to soi 7. All I'm saying is that there are options to being ripped off.
At the end of the day, the bars at soi 33 do have their purpose: they provide variety and a change of pace, especially for those who hunt for pussy every other day.
And that, I feel, is the niche they best fit into.

i couldn't quite get my head round this. If I go to a Soi 33 bar after 7 years of living just up the road does that make me:
a. a cheap ass (a type of low cost donkey)
OR
b. a regular local expat with an ulterior motive
So I thought about it over a few 59 Baht beers last night in 33. And it came to me how right he is:
I do indeed drive a cheap Toyota (a modern donkey) and I have an ulterior motive which has nothing to do with the quality of female talent or BF level.
I just go there to get pissed during happy hour because at those prices most beer bars do not provide air con, a nice toilet to piss in and well dressed ladies to bring my refill.
Oh, and I do not buy many LDs. If a lady has been particularly amusing and has spent a lot of time listening to my ramblings I tip her a hundred baht, ensuring it goes directly to the girl as it will make more of a difference to her life and ability to buy food for her kids, if any. Also I dislike chubby bar girls so I keep them off the carbohydrates.

Just to point out the obvious, the LD system certainly isn't confined to Soi 33.
I find it pretty congenial myself. After all, it's entirely up to you to decide when or whether you want to buy a girl a drink, and you can use your LD-buying to send signals (indicate interest, lack of interest, etc etc). Buying her friend (s) a drink can also be useful - it helps to establish 'jai dee' credentials, and the shyer, less confident girls often open up a lot more when they have some support. All told, this drink-buying offers a pretty good simulation of 'normal' socialising - you can just relax, take things as they come and play the situation by ear as it develops.
What's the alternative? "Pick a girl you like, and this is what it will cost you per 15 mins to have her sit with you. Just sign this contract on the dotted line." No thanks - not my style at all.
There are many different P4P games you can play in LOS. OK, short-term tourists who want to screw as many girls as humanly possible in a short space of time need to cut to the chase. But there are plenty of punters (me included) who have no interest in that - we can afford to play things long, want to look for something a little 'different', and actually enjoy all the little intrigues and uncertainties along the way. Personally, I don't resent paying for this at all - it's exactly what I want from P4P, and I'm very grateful to have found somewhere that offers it. If you want something a lot more transparent and cut-and-dried - well, LOS offers that too. Horses for courses.

If I was a long time resident of Bangkok, I would probably cultivate the same kind of 'ulterior motive' as you vis a vis the Soi 33 bars:

Obviously you have more brains than money since you have found a good way to subvert the system in soi 33. Plus you drive a Toyota.
That kind of attitude makes you not a 'cheap ass' punter, but a smart ass punter (and I'm not being sarcastic).
Some of the most vocal members on this board are residents and there reasons for frequenting soi 33 are perfectly valid, much like yours. And they put forward their case convincingly.
But let us not give the wrong impression to the thousands of other tourists who come here for sanook, walk in after happy hour and bear the full brunt of the soi 33 system.
Of course, they are big boys and can decide for themselves whether to stay or leave.
But a lot of guys read this board before they plan their bangkok holiday, and there is no harm in being forewarned, is there?
