I just re-read your post and I would like to offer a couple more comments:

I think this point it CRUCIAL. ÝWe are on a sex-oriented board, and as such, the whole view is skewed. ÝP4P accounts for a LOT less tourism and income than would be evident from this board. ÝThere are whole segments of the tourist population who NEVER see boards like this. ÝLonely Planet types, Khao San Rd. types, presumably cute ladies from the Netherlands, etc., ALL come to Thailand to do other than pay for sex.
MY first visits to Thailand were NOT for P4P, and I scarcely even KNEW about it. ÝMy Thai GF wouldn't have let me NEAR Patpong.
I just HATE to see the skewed perspective of this board characterize the WHOLE of the LOS experience.
The sad fact is, however, that MANY of those on this board will NEVER scratch the surface of what is in Thailand. ÝCall me elitist, but I prefer to be around prople who can appreciate MORE than just cheap sex. ÝNothing wrong with it, but those who can't see past it are NOT my kind of folks..

I see your point about this forum making it appear that BKK has very little outside of the p4p scene, but Iíd guess that a Khao San Road forum would make it appear that BKK has very little to offer outside of grubby bedsits, hippy clothing, hawker stall food and second hand book stalls. Ý
(i.e a KS Road forum will be every bit as skewed as this one)
I think itís a pity that many on this forum will never get to see the other side of BKK, but in the same way itís a pity the KS Road types never get to see the 5star hotels and the chique dining etc. ÝBut I guess we all chose what do our own thing while on holiday.
Personally, I think the combination Thailand has (the naughty & the cultural, the cheap & the chique) is almost unique and adds to itís charm. ÝI would hate to see any one of those aspects disappear. ÝBKK wouldnít be BKK without the rich businessmen, rich tourist couples, scruffy backpackers and sex touristsÖ Ýto me thatís what makes it a great place to go. Ý

I was going to develop a post with apt quotes and intricate arguments in response to your white horse charge. But then I started thinking through your recent posts and the shoving match with chomper - are you ok man? seriously you don't seem to be your normal rational, entertaining self...plus we usually agree on everything but these positions you've been defending seem largely incoherent. You're just not your usual crispy self.

Whilst I agree the focus of this forum is P4P, it is not necessarly the nature of it. ÝIf this was strictly a P4P forum then BK would not be supporting threads and links on the other aspects of LOS (for example the best place to get pancakes).
It is the members who post that determine the focus and balance of the forum. ÝIf you look at Z forum you see a variety of subjects from the intellegent to the insane, but you will not find folks like BigDUSA there (or do you?) because their focus is P4P.
The bottom line is that the 10% that HS and X were referring to need to come back to this forum and DNFTFT.

I was kinda being tongue in cheek. I really was considering a response to the "clean up P4P" position and the encroachment of standard norms into the isolated pockets of alternative behavior. I thought about the PM thing...but, maybe sloppily, I wondered whether you were really on Dblock's side (generously interpreted by you) on this one. Not because I want to challenge you but because I really wondered if I have to. I'm thinking about entropy and brownian motion here. But as I considered the playing out of the discussion I couldn't really see you on the other side. Then the recent obstreperousness factored into my scenario generation and I wondered about that. And how that might play into the development of the discussion.
I apologize actually, there was no way you could respond to my post in the way is was phrased (other than the prior apt pointer).
The position that interests me is that which recognizes that LOS is fundamentally a different kind of place, with good and bad qualities interpreted by observers with recognized or unrecognized biases.
But is it broke? Moreso than other places? And who are the polical philosophers on this board that are up to the task of directing the resocialization of 65 million people? ÝAnd I am so rarely "cute" you shouldn't discourage my indulgence...
