Another two bars I liked are on Patpong 2 down the street from Star of Light (cubyking and I had a excellent bj there). Cosmos and the bar next door to it. A fair number of expats go there. Girls are not pushy and the food is good and cheap.

I'll try to put in my tuppence worth without getting into a slanging match with my nemesis (es?) CJ & CP. Sorry, no idea what the plural of nemesis is.
I stopped going to Patpong when they put the nightmarket in. It added a lot of hassle just getting from one bar to another.
In the days (mid to late 80's) when the main (& best) bars were Goldfinger, Safari, Superstar + Superstar Disco upstairs & King's Castle 1 (ground floor, left of Pussy Galore, but now renamed as another KG bar), most of the rip-off joints were on the small adjoining soi that used to have the bookshop on the corner.
I returned a few months ago to check up on my old haunts and was shocked at how the mighty have fallen. Not one of the above mentioned bars could compete with a top Nana or Cowboy bar.
My advice, if you can find some good, recommended bars in Patpong, great, but I think Nana & Cowboy have better looking girls, though also higher prices.
Also, does anyone remember 'Limelight', 'Butterfly' (with the MTV videos) and Grand Prix? Ah, those were the days.
To be honest, as the size of the bar scene has grown in Bangkok, there are a hell of a lot more girls now (obviously!) and I think, younger better looking ones.
Remember, Nana used to have a half dozen places on the ground floor, minus all the beer bars and about a dozen or so smaller places on the 1st floor + the Jap member club where G-Spot is and the snooker hall up top. No Asoke Corner, Clinton Plaza or the area opposite.
Lots more choice now I think.

I do like a good debate !
In July I went with a 23stone 6ft plus mate to one of the upstairs bars. We were sort of armed with this knowledge. As a very amateur scribbler of novels as a hobby(not good enough to be published!) I am always looking for something interesting. We saw the scam from the mamasan and we said ,"Good-bye". Perhaps a large friend helps. We had more of a laugh in the mixed? Katoey bar......and a downstairs bar then legged it back to Soi Cowboy.
Some bulletin boards get upset if the discussion/debate/bloody argument interferes with the serving of the 'After Eight mints' at the dinner party.
Conflict is entertainment ! Keep it up

When got back in my place , she doubled the agreed price and I told her to get lost.Did not bothered to try again after that.
I think the plural is nemesises (?)
And what comes to verbal fencing between CJ , Chompoo and BFSU, I'd say: Fight , boys , I'll give You cigarettes !!! LOL

Having started this thread, I feel some responsibility to the debate going on, the important thing for me is that from all the ìpostsî made I have got the information I needed which surely is the purpose of initially starting a thread.
What I have done and I am sure most members of this forum do, is read the various opinions and experiences of all those that take the time to contribute, from this and our own experiences we form our own opinions and we go about our business a little bit wiser.
If everyone had the same opinion, then there is little point to this forum!!!!!!!!!
I have had said on this forum, that I am a ìNewbieî and in comparison to some of the experience ìposterî here this is a true statement, but in fact I have been to LOS amongst other SEA destination numerous times over the years, so I am not totally green. However, because of this limited experience, when I read the posts made by CP & CJ and others, all of the opinions expressed make perfect sense to me and no one is right or wrong (in my opinion!).
For example, I am sure anyone who visits Patpong (everyone should at least once!) and has a ìcold oneî in one of the Queens Group bars, and then compares this experience to another bar. They should soon understand there is a difference, and the Queens Group is high pressured, a bit clinical, and not cheap! But because of this I would agree that it is safe for a ìNewbieî.
Now if anyone is in BKK between 27/11 and 2/12, I will buy the first round but not in Queens!
PS, born in Gosport, lived and worked in Singapore now living in UK (Small world CP!)

LImelight bar, boy that brought back some memories.
I first went there about 1988 and fell head over heels for the mamasan who was about 30ish and very cute... I kept asking her to go out with me, but she told me that she did not date??? Then I tried for a lunch date or early dinner before the bar opened. No luck at all..
Never figured out what the problem was, but finding a girl in a bar that was just "unavailable" was tantalizing to put it mildly.
I was going to Bkk about four times a year then and it took until trip number five to give up .. fortunately there were other attractions to keep me busy.
One regret that I have is that I did not discover the BJ bars until about 1993 or so. I was reluctant to go into them as the ones I did know about were "upstairs" and I had bad experiences in the couple of upstairs bars I had been in as they tried to rip me off with excessive cover charges.
I was probably lucky as I walked out of the two places (once alone) without paying any extra .. perhaps it is my size or just that I looked so pissed off, that they didn't attempt to keep me there.

Small technical point: Nemesis was the Greek divinity associated with the retribution visited on mortals guilty of Hubris (arrogant behaviour) resulting from Ate (moral blindness) and so doesn't really have a plural but if she did it would be Nemeses.
