I have actually never read one single article, seen one news report or heard even one Bush administration official even discuss the "crackdown" on Thailands P4P industry.
Where are you getting this?
Why do you assume this is the fault of the US? ÝWhy not assume that the Howard Government is encouraging PM Thaksin's crackdown?

What? ÝI have heard of no such monetary assurances and I live in Washington DC and follow the actions of my government reasonably closely. Ý
I don't think the current American administration has anything at all to do with Thailands crackdown on lewd shows and nudity in the bars.
Further, I suspect that many people dramatically over estimate the value of punters to Thailand's tourist industry. ÝWhile there would be considerable pain in some places such as Pattaya, I suspect the Thai's may well gamble that the cleaner image may well attract more family tourists who pour money into the taxable, rather than the underground economy.

I was talking to people who know .....(not about this crackdown) but the drug purge that resulted in 2500 drug suspects deaths from febuary2003. ...The americans supported that effort, and along with thai authorities worked on intelligence about ji in bangkok, and the rest of thailand also. INfact in australian media this is common knowledge that americans allowed thai authorities to interogate suspects for them. I still only suspose and do not know that the same adminsitration is suporting this crack down also. I base that on the believe that we do contribute significantly to their economy as to need some assurrances to discourage us.. The reality is single males travelling spend the most money...And 37% of those arrivving are that.

DG you need to read the news more often. USA supports the drug effort only and the PM just publicly thumb his nose at any USA money (about 10 million USD) when it is try to institute its policy regarding Burma as a condition for ongoing support.
The only thing that the USA has commented on along with other countries is child prositution in which Thailand is making headway in erricating these offenders back to their home country.

I'm guessing "entertainment outlet" is the polite word for go-go bars, so let's do some math...
The count of go-go bars in NEP is 9 on the bottom level, 17 on the second level and 4 on the top level. Scratch Hollywood Strip and Carnival which are closed for renovation and the old Rock Hard/Vixens space which is being remodeled as well. Lollipop has reopened as their banning order has expired and I believe the same is true for the other place across the plaza (was it Playskool or one of the Rainbows?)

O-kaaay... 27 out of 27 bars are hosting "obscene shows"? I would be very interested to know what the definition of obscene is.
Keep in mind that some of the venue operators are way ahead of the curve and went back to full bikini many weeks ago so topless dancing is not part of the count here.
Clearly this idiot is talking to the press and needs to be called on it. I think a letter to the Post is in order.

Yes, in every media this is common knowledge. ÝAmerica lets other countries interrogate suspects so long as they are not apprehended inside the US. ÝIf those suspects are Thai citizens or are otherwise suspects of any nationality captured in Thailand the US may well be Ýperfectly happy to allow the Thai's to do the interrogation.
So? ÝAmerica operates with the same policy with countless other countries.

Well, I think the American government supports drug suppression anywhere - that doesn't mean the US approves of extra judicial killings in the name of drug control.

I really don't think the US government cares too terribly much if Thai bargirls are dancing naked in Nana Plaza or not. ÝI suppose any American administration would say they are against it? ÝBut wouldn't most Australian administrations?
I doubt seriously the American government has hatched a plan with PM Thaksin to crackdown on the nightlife in Thailand. ÝI would guess the Bush administration would probably approve of the idea, but they aren't going to offer to make up the money Thailand loses from a decline of punters showing up to frequent go-go bars to see lewd shows and topless dancers. ÝJust not going to happen.
PM Thaksin opposed quite a lot of past and present US policy, and has had no problem resisting the wishes of the Bush administration. ÝI really don't believe America has one single thing to do with the "crackdown" on nightlife in Thailand. Ý

guess my understanding was to decentralize alot of farangs in a given area, so targets are less appealing.TERRORISTS....have been caught with plans to bomb the place. Maybe as you say americans have nothing to do with that, you sound well informed to trust that side of things. Then if its not to decrease ji targets populace( would look bad if 200 of us died there) then why?

Did a round of Nana and cowboy yesterday - by and large business as usual, altho certainly some of the shows/lesbian acts, shower shows etc have been cut or tamed - as to obscene shows, - perhaps he [Purachai] means the farangs getting tugged off in the corner, - seems to be a more popular pastime these days, or a way for the average looking BG to get a quick earn - 500bt the usual asking price !
