If this a recurring problem, someone should report it to the Tourist Police and the local Police Station too [Lumpini I think is the local for lower Suk; it is down Wireless Rd on the left side]
The Arab area opposite Gullies all the way to Soi 3 is a rough area and should be avoided if possible but I did not know scams or physical threats were going on.
Very sad if true.

I walk there on regular basis and never felt unsafe...
I think it's like the scam at the airport.... it might happen to some, but not to most....

Gullivers has been a hangout for the African crowd for many years. Been in and out of that area (soi31/2) is quite safe. In general, the scammers can smell newbies. I have never seen any violence from any Arabs or Africans. If you act like you know the score they dont bother you.
Had a funny encounter months ago when an African approached while walking and knew the same "qualifying line" as the girls...."How long you been in Thailand?" Depending on the circumstances I answer "first day" to toy with them or "probably ten years more than you". This guy smelled my American accent I guess and immediately tried to strike up a conversation saying: "hey, u American? I'm from Liberia let me shake your hand, he was so excited to think he had an American to talk to because Liberia is/was much like an American "colony". He kept following me saying "I'm from Liberia, we are Americans" LOL.
I just said cool, enjoy your stay. He drifted away. There are scammers around there of course but elsewhere also and to repeat, they can smell targets. IMO much safer than many places in the US. Never seen violence but I have seen Africans running from immigration police in front of Gullivers..LOL
Wager that a visa check in that area would be more than the immigration detention center could hold!

I had an idiot African walking after me once on soi 5, and he was very insistent on talking to me, I just shouted back, "f*** off!" and that was the end of it.
