Cant give an opinion on Nana Plaza & SC as I did not go there once this trip. There are tourists in the streets and the places where I go dont complain.
However there was only 38 people in my plane when I left france if it indicate anything I dont know...and the plane ticket was the cheapest I paid since my first trip over 10 years ago.

Beergarden is really a hit & miss, like every freelancer place, but you need to find only ONE good one after all.
My humble opinion is that its better to miss 10 good ones than to take one lame/problem one back home, so if the girl give ANY sign to be problem I just dump her on the spot.

What you are reading is trying to create dissention where none exists at the moment. The country is more calm now that it has been in 5 years. The government is on top of any attempt at destabilizing the country now.

You will find a big change in walking down Sukhumvit during the daytime, with very few street vendors operating before 5pm.

The number of tourists is just starting to grow as the rainy season has lasted longer this year, just ending in the last week, instead of the end of September, and most likely is a more realistic reason for the just now increasing of tourist counts. Rain dissuades tourists faster than revolts, but isn't as glamorous of a perceived reason.

Taxi flag drops are going up 10% in the next few weeks, so you might expect a slight increase in real fares. It has been before 2006 since the last increase, and they need it. This government finally approved their demand, something the Thaksin supported governments wouldn't even address.

There is also a ban now on any media source publicizing anything about Thaksin, as he is seen as the most destabilizing force at work against governments he doesn't support.

What you are reading is a know-nothing farang thinking he's got the situation in Thailand figured out.

There is PLENTY of dissent out there, but the dissenters have silenced themselves so they don't get taken away, tortured, etc.

Stability, yeah, great...and as we all know, "the trains ran on time under Mussolini"...one wonders how you would react to martial law and widespread oppression in your own country?

Thaksin, "the most destabilizing force"...well, out of the mouths of babes, despite your daftness you did get one thing right, but not for the reason you think: Thaksin's main "crime" (and yes, he was far from perfect, corrupt as they come, etc.) was to give the poor and disenfranchised some hope that they could have a say in running things. Which is 100% unacceptable to the middle and upper class. But you know what? That realization in the minds of the poor is not going to go away. So enjoy your vendor-free streets...for now.

And by your way of thinking, every tourist is going to see that invisible dessenter, and get scared off. Yeah Riiiiiight. Because you can't see it, there must be huge amounts of dissent....lolololol. Get real. For a tourist right now the country is as peaceful as it has been in almost 10 years, except for killings still in the deep south, but they don't aim at tourists, and are far away from normal tourist haunts.

Other than the taxi fares going up, it is a great time for tourists for at least the next year. First they are cleaning up Phuket, next Pattaya, as far as mafia scams go.

Koolbreez:

madfrog is absolutely, 100% correct.

This thread isn't the appropriate place for you to spout your political garbage.

Open another one somewhere else and I am certain you will get all the arguments you want.

Not much more interesting stuff to add about biergarden for now
I do however miss the street sellers, not on sukhumvit, but on other parts of bangkok the streets feel empty whitout them.
Hope this is a temporary thing, many people lost their job with this non-sense
