FWIW and sometimes it ain't worth much. As a sex tourist I spend $125USD almost every day that I'm on vacation. I know that Ýmany guys spend less but not that much less. A fairly high % of the money I spend on BG goes back to her home town to support her family.

How will the Thai economy make up the loss. Maybe they figure the asian tourist will travel to LOS in such large numbers that they will make it up in volume. During SARS the sex tourist still came to Thailand in large numbers. I am only basing this on the two trips I made during SARS. I looked at the number of guys without families getting off the plane and there where a fair number of us. There are other places I can take my USD if LOS doesn't want me. Hello, Cambodia, PI and a couple of islands off S'pore

Again:

This is NOT about money. ÝThis is about appearances, and face.

The guys who come to Thailand and spend $3000 over a two week vacation feel that they are contributing significantly to the economy. ÝThere is NO reason to believe this. ÝSukhumvit/Silom are 2 little areas in a country where literally thousands of local venues are all but invisible to farangs, 24/7/365. These range from little bars, to big MPs, to lady houses, to depressing brothels. ÝThai men ROUTINELY indulge; it's ingrained in the culture. ÝFarang bucks are a segment, but a small one. Add Pattaya, and it's STILL insignificant.

The publicity, however is ALL centered around farang P4P. ÝThe whole country loses face when forced to admit that it exists. ÝThis is especially problematic, due to the constant bragging and flaunting of the activities of farangs on sites like this.

Please don't get me wrong: it's not BK's fault, or the guys at Nanapong, or Stickman's. ÝJust like the debate about naming bargirls we have sex with, this is about our OWN personal discretion. ÝAnd the same folks are having a hard time getting it. ÝFolks who can't think ahead more than the next dose of Viagra, and don't seem to be able to assess the effect their actions have on others.

Dickheads.

People who say that the Thais don't really want to eradicate P4P are correct. ÝThey just want it in the closet, or at least out of their faces, and they don't want the world to think of their country as a whorehouse.

It ain't all that tough to figure out.

I agree with brother Haam, this isn't about money. However if it were and the above quote is what they were pinning their hopes on then the Jakarta bombing pretty much took care of that. Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý

< ''Tourists from China, Japan, Taiwan, Australia whom we expected to come at the end of this month will never come here after the blast,'' said Anake Srichevachart, vice president of Association of Thai Travel Agents. > Ý Ý

< ''We've poured in huge amount of money on promotion of Thailand, but this bomb blew away all of our efforts,'' Prakit said. > Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý Ý
So who does that leave that are still brave enough to continue coming to LOS, no matter what, and spend their money? ( Do you really need 3 guesses? ) Peace

Talking for the cameras?

Shame on the Bangkok Post for printing a summary of the comments by Deputy Interior Minister Pracha Maleenont ("Now it's war on lewdness, striptease" - 12 August 2003) without a more critical review of the facts.

The Post reported: "Mr Pracha, who personally supervises the social order crusade, said he inspected Nana Plaza on Sukhumvit road on Aug 8 and found 27 entertainment outlets were hosting obscene shows."

An examination of Nana Plaza shows that there are only 30 venues that would be considered "entertainment outlets" i.e. go-go bars and that 3 are currently closed for renovations. We thus return to our magic number of 27 and we're still left waiting for his definition of obscenity.

Quite a number of bar operators are ahead of the curve as regards the current whims of the Social Order Crusaders (neither side works in a vacuum, after all) and in recent weeks have not permitted so much as topless dancing. Furthermore the lightening-quick "bamboo telegraph" at work in the Plaza ensures that any naughtiness would be under wraps before these Crusaders darkened the doors of most clubs, his claims of foreign agents provocateur notwithstanding.

To put it most simply, Deputy Minister Pracha likely could not have seen what he claims to have seen and certainly not in the numbers he claims to have seen it! The 1966 Entertainment Venue Act forbids nude and lewd shows, true, but it doesn't seem to mention the phantasms and agendas of minor government officials.

He would do well to take to heart the American truism that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar; he'd find most club owners would be very cooperative if clear limits were set and the rules fairly enforced. Sadly, he has set out instead on a course of distortion, propaganda and media manipulation, and adopted a posture of confrontation rather than cooperation.

Playing fast and loose with the facts as in the aftermath of his latest inspection cum photo opportunity only serves to suggest that the laudable goals of the Crusade are little more than a cynical and self-serving sham. And for the Post to convey the good Deputy Minister's "findings" without a more critical examination is very shoddy journalism indeed.

I agree its not about money, but disagree that the Internet is the cause.

The USA would be in the same dilemma if the Moral Majority got into power. You would see a new campaign on violence in movies, games, gambling, lotteries etc. Let's see this is starting to sound like Thailand now

This is just a social order campaign with the Minister of Interior try to save his job before Oct. He is already on notice.

Who gets more Internet exposure than Eden's and Barron's? Nothing happening there because they maintain an acceptable low profile and not spewing out in the streets like Nana.

I believe the punter brings a lot of dollars into the Thai ecomony, but even if that drops to zero it will be clouded by the fact that you have SARS, IRAQ War and terrorism into the picture to blame the reduction of tourist dollars thus no accountability.

To BigD's comment, I have found most (Not all) of the money earmarked for Mom and Pop back home ends up being spent on card games, Thai boyfriends and/or drugs. So unless you are depositing the money directly into the parents bank account or have the small percentage of good girls, I would doubt that any reduction will hurt the Thai farmer.

I glad to see that they only plan to make sure that Excise tax is being collect properly at the MP's and are not talking about shutting them down.

Lastly, another plus Thailand has going for it is that it is booming. Exports are up, Car sales are up, Real Estate is up, Stock Market is near double 1 year ago, so the reduction in tourist income could go unoticed by the total increase in GNP

JackRabbit present...

"Mr Pracha said he was not worried that tighter controls on obscene shows would affect tourism. Tourists visiting places providing indecent shows were of low-quality and Thailand did not welcome such visitors.

``We do not want them here.

``They spend little money and look down on Thai women and Thai people,'' Mr Pracha said. "

1) How about those , who spend A LOT of money , 50-100 k in their trip ( met those).

2) If persons visiting those place are not welcomed , they speak nothing about how to restrain them.

3) If they close these or those places , things simply move somewhere else , scheme stays.

4) IF there are" official persons" earning money from entertainment business , that cuts their incomes , too.

But I certainly love to hear being called low-classed by someone who has never met me.

Haam sup is 100% right. It is not about money. I even think a "cleaner" image could be beneficial for the tourism industry in Thailand.
Don't forget the bread and butter are families who don't want their kids to see naughty things when they shop in Patpong night market. Or don't want to answer to "mummy, who is this young girl with grandpa?
The pure farang sex tourism is peanuts. Few hundreds of bars and discos, which don't pay taxes anyway.
They may close the "in your face" venues but as said it is only the tip of the iceberg. There are and there will always be thousands of places around.
So what ? It is their country, they can do it their way if they want. We will just have to P4P Thai style instead of farang style.

I think if Thailand wants to promote a cleaner image they really should work on cleaning up Thailand.

> You can't take a canal boat ride anymore because of the backup stench of raw sewage.

> Can't swim in Pattaya because of all kinds of water pollution.

> Can't breath the air in BKK because nothing is being done about the polluting buses. This week the government official in charge of clean air is up in arms stating that we have enough testing, but the bad buses are still allowed on the roads or sold to third parties.

> Garbage lying all around the streets & beaches

> Let us not forget the two-tier pricing policy along with the many scams (Gems etc..)

It is time to clean up Thailand or the tourism will decline as word spreads. Do parents really want their children playing on the beaches and water in Thailand's popular tourist spots?

You can easy detour the three P4P areas, but not the filth that is spreading throughout Thailand. You now have to travel to remote areas to find decent surroundings
