Quote: from CalEden on 11:27 pm on May 10, 2005 I received sales information about a year ago. I believe they were marketing or mail order available from England. I believe the cost was from $50 to $125 a bottle. My recollection could be off.
And that's the problem. Duty free at Prague airport, £3 a bottle (a couple of years ago). Back alley shop outside of Prague, £2 (still). If you can find it made with wormwood, it's a buzz, otherwise it's just cheap alcohol. No wormwood, stick to Ricard. I believe the Swiss have just made it legal again (after about 100 years), but I'm not sure if that means 'with wormwood' or not.

Hmmm. £55 a bottle and no mention of wormwood. It always amazes me that they can get away with it when eastern European countries can sell perfectly acceptable absinthe at less than £5 a bottle...and when you see the same bottle on sale in London it's around £50-£80! Euro version of Thai JW Black Label fever I suppose.

The Swiss absinthe mentions wormwood. The last one in the link.

Didn't spot that one! If it's made with wormwood and you haven't had it that way before I'd say it was worth the money just to try it (I still haven't looked at the link provided -- I'm assuming it too is around the £50 mark. If it's much more then I'd have to say it's not really worth it...)

I tried Absinthe and frankly didn't see what all the fuss was about. But either I wasn't in the mood or I got some of the weak stuff. Pobably the latter. I see on the Internet King of Spirits Gold which is supposed to be THE stuff with 100mg of Thujone vs probably bugger all in what I had before. I fancy giving it another go but it's US$200 a bottle. Anybody know where I can get it or an equivalent strength any cheaper? Going to the Czech republic isnt an option.

Apart from the (slight) non-alcohol buzz from the wormwood (thujone) it's simply not worth it. Stronger spirits are available for much, much less money, as are recreational drugs (but NOT in Thailand, obviously). If you're going to spend big cash on drink get a decent Scotch malt, a decent Irish (I'd recommend 'The Midleton' sp?), real aged tequila, even wine. And remember, Absinthe was prohibited not because people got drunk but because it sends you barking mad and kills (with the wormwood). Stick to isopropyl alcohol if that's all you're after (but that blinds you first).

Mark C, have you read Saurons informative posts in this thread about Absinthe? He appears to be quite knowledgeable on the subject and it seems unlikely to me that it causes the supposed insanity so commonly believed at least in the case of moderate consumers. Hell Tequila causes ibrain damage in the case of excessive consumption much as any toxic substance would. Cyborg

I would guess he hasn't, if he lauds the cheap czech Absinthe Interesting thread, to say the least - had some at Q bar a while back (they had Jello Absinthe shots).

I did actually. The (medical) jury is still out on wormwood. And as far as sage goes, it was (maybe not anymore) sold in Japanese head shops owing to a legal loophole. You can get a bit of a buzz off it if smoked in sufficient quantities (and a bit of a headache). Information as meaningless as ''68 to 72 degree (% abv) which is 1/2 the proof'' is really not very helpful. ABV stands for alcohol by volume and a phrase like ''68 to 72 degree (% ABV) which is 1/2 the proof'' doesn't actually mean anything at all. Proof is a way to describe the alcohol content of a spirit. British "proof spirit" contains 57.1% alcohol by volume (ABV) or 49.28% alcohol by weight at 51 deg F. US proof spirit contains 50% alcohol by volume at 60 deg F. Cheap Czech Republic stuff was just that, cheap (c.£3 a bottle) -- you could buy the exact same stuff in London for anywhere between £40 and £100. Would you be happier at those prices? Oh and all the rigmarole involving tongs, sugar, etc. isn't really necessary. And moderate consumers weren't the problem (obviously). He has some justification in saying what he said about the wine industry, though. They had a lot of support from the government (making up a fair proportion of it).
