Quote: from dirty guru on 7:47 am on Sep. 16, 2003 i once saw a ten outside on a soi 5 bar, only to be tuned away , the sign read japanese only!
Maybe I'll touch a nerve here but is restricting a club to a single country's people the same as restricting people of a particular skin colour regardless of what country they are from. I honestly do not know how to think about that. I mean there are lots expat clubs based on being American or whatever. And clubs from particular universities. In Vancouver, in Canada there are gift stores downtown, that cater solely to Japanese tourists. I went in a couple and got a real icey reception which pissed me off somewhat. I guess they would have served me if I bought something. My point is that even a society and country as racial mixed as Canada has divided or allows the market to be divided into sections that may be directed to one country's people or another. If the club says its for Americans only are the Brits or French going to get all pissed off. It's funny but if I do see such a sign, I do not really feel one way or another about it. Because I know America is a multiculural society. But if I see a sign that says Japanese only, I do get bothered. The reason for that is that history plays a part and I also know about the racial restrictions placed on foreigners in Japan. So does that mean that Canadians, multicultural as they are would be okay to have a Canadian only club, but not Japan because they do not have a multicultural society. Is a Japanese only club racist in intent or just business. Is the word Japanese used to restrict colour, or is it politically restrictive relative to holding a particular passport. What about a Thai only club in Thailand, would that be racist to? Heres the funny part. If 100 people with different skin colour than mine said, it's OK fastmover WE approve, I would say the question was answered. If 100 people with the SAME skin colour as mine said, it's OK fastmover WE approve, I would say the question REMAINS unanswered. It just wouldn't feel right.

The fortuna hotel next door caters to Jananese so maybe the club offers room service. Or maybe the Japanese being so shy do a hundred yard dash in and out of the place. You need time lapse photography to catch them in flight.

Also the issue was not the tip - the issue was that she did not want to service an Indian for the normal tip BUT was ready to forget her prejudices for a VERY LARGE tip.
How would you feel about this situation if you knew that this girl has regularly been stiffed by Indian customers, and regularly hasn't received any tip from them in the past? It would make her reluctance to service indians comprehensible. Hence, when you offered her a guaranteed tip, her reason for refusing was no longer there. Thus, it is possible that her 'discrimination' was not racial or cultural, but economically motivated. I don't know anything about the tipping habits of the Indian culture, so I might be theorizing out of my ass - but I did encounter a dislike for Europeans, and favoritism for Americans amongst bargirls. After observing a bunch of European patrons, I started to understand why - they tip very infrequently, and appear stingy with their money. Not so for many Americans. So, I de-emphasized my European roots, and pushed my American origin, in order to not run into that prejudice Harry

I am surprised that many of you are surprised. This has been going on for years. Sure it is discrimination. But, it is not news. I walk by those bars on Soi 5, and by the ones at Thaniya Plaza all the time, and yes, I like those girls (and even speak a bit of Japanese having lived there), but there is little we can do about it. In addition, it has been my experience that some of those girls work at Japanese only bars because they like Japanese men. This doesn't mean you can't go out and try and meet them as FL's somewhere else. Just not at their bar. I'd love to go into these places. Put things in perspective: Many Thai men scream about discrimination because some Thai girls only go out with Farangs. respectfully submitted, Lalake

There is a big difference between not being able to barfine a particular girl (that's her choice) and not being admitted through the door of a bar. Does Thailand have any non-discrimination laws about admittance to public establishments?

Presumably not..... Personally I have no worries about not being allowed to go somewhere, I just do have a problem with people not being allowed to go where I do. It reflects on me. I was outside Long Gun the other day and several black guys entered no problem, and a couple of Indians as well. And I certainly do believe that 'doormen' make their own policy...just look at the discrepancies surrounding for example Rainbow. If the clubs policy was discriminatory, Mr Doorman would have great delight in enforcing it, we all know such people enjoy the thrill of power. The fact that the discrimination is intermittant suggests it is not club policy. After all even immigration officials seem to enjoy making up rules as they go along.... Next time I see the Long Gun owner/manager I intend to discuss it with her.
