ThaidUp, "Your window into Thailand is the web thus you asume that the net is the cause of all this activity. ... The web is a non-issue. It is only important to BG's trying to get money from punters" I think you'd laugh if you bothered to read your own post: The web is a non-issue? Holy Diver already covered it, so I'll refrain.... As for MY window into Thailand, it's true, I don't live there, but I have spent quite a bit of time there since the early '80s, and most of it NOT in a bar. I have Thai friends here and in Thailand, who are educated, and can discuss these issues, and I read the same papers you do. So unless you dine with the PM, or MPs, and have some special insight into Thai politics, I would suggest that you learn to think critically, and don't believe everything you hear from your barstool. haam sup

HS I am laughing, but what I am laughing at is your ego that thinks that anyone who does agree with you is not a critical thinker. I agree to disagree with your opening statement.. "Without placing myself above it, I will state that this, and every other forum, bulletin board, and website about the 'nightlife' in Thailand has contributed to this latest development. When it was all relatively discreet (I said RELATIVELY, i.e, before the internet), it was business as usual, even after a few highly visible 'crackdowns'. İNow, these sites rub Thaksin's face in it, and, more importantly, rub the face of the average Thai in it." Yeah, discreet alright when the American GI's come over by the boatloads for R&R, just asked BigDUSA about the discreet old days İ I still stay by my opinion that the Internet is a non-issue in regards to the crackdown on the bars. This is part of the new social order campaign started in 2002 with Purachai Holy Diver I agree with your statement.. "If that were true the Thai Government would not be busily trying to censor internet access in their country from anything that they deem casts Thailand in a bad light" True but this censorship has to do more with gaming and sex corrupting Thailand's youth Hence.."Surapong said Websites featuring explicit sexual content and material deemed subversive to national security and the monarchy would be blocked by the country's 18 Internet service providers (ISPs). The minister yesterday discussed the issue with ISP representatives in an effort to make cyberspace "a common and pleasant place". Its all about social order, hell Purachai tried to ban dancing and karaoke booths. So you can completely take the Internet out of the picture and you would still have the crack down on the bars because they do not fit into the social order. Except that the Internet is a whole lot bigger than nightlife forums! Ten years ago you simply couldn't get news about Thailand unless you has an overseas subscription to the Bangkok Post or someone wrote you a letter from the Kingdom or someone brought intelligence back first hand. Now with the internet everybody with even a passing interest in Thailand can log on to one of a dozen portals and a hundred news outlets and get 50 stories per source. In fact, there's such a vacuum effect of news niches needing to be filled so the mass media has something to sell that almost anything, however trivial to Western life -- rogue elephants and dying popstars -- will be online within mere minutes. 10 years ago most countries in the world would only appear in the Western press if there was a passing in the royal family, a coup or a war. Combine this with the fact that the average news consumer is less critical than ever and you can see the age-old adage that there's no such thing as bad publicity coming true. It doesn't matter what the reality on the ground is whether or not this crackdown or that is right or fair, it just plays very well with the vast majority who are now more tuned in then ever.

ThaidUp, It's not about my ego; it's about several people explaining how the internet has made the scene accessible to the WORLD, and you clinging to your myopic outlook. İYeah, the GIs were BLATANT during R&R, BUT IT WASN'T PLASTERED OVER HUNDREDS OF WEB PAGES FOR THE WHOLE f_ckING WORLD, INCLUDING THE THAI GOVERNMENT, TO SEE. Not that the government didn't know about it, but they also knew that there was NO widespread global publicity about it, either. İAnd the Thai economy 35 years ago was COMPLETELY different. So spare me the web-phobic, too-old-to-understand-it, wish-it-was-the-good-old-days, geriatric fol-de-rol. Have another scotch. haam sup

There's still plenty of well-reasoned, and calm discourse going on in this thread. Why not add to it, rather than going looking for something to get your panties in a twist? ThaidUp and I are reaching an 'understanding' haam sup

I believe that we will hear of several examples in the near future, of westerners caught in acts with say 18 year olds in places like phuket, pattaya and bangkok, and servely dealt with. I can also see raids on bj bars as a possibility!..NOW more than ever is a good time to double check that girls id card..if you think she is younger than the 20 she says. THIS crack down could also (like the drug one ) involve dirty tricks. Who can forget the guy in knoh kaen who drowned himself (according to police in a bucket of water ,while in lock up!.....I am heading back in three weeks today, (without bloody wife) and will restrain my activities to pool, bowling, and only nightclubing for p4p at cm2....spasso, or the odd hot pool girl in an arvo warm up. SEEMs clubs might get raided, as could soapies, and/or bj bars or go goS......I wont even mention money as it might be entrappment....might end up paying 3500 baht a night, instead of knocking a stunner down to 2500 or less, but this way its safer.....Theres no doubt hamm soup is right on this score....And i believe bushs visit soon has some role in the tidy up the place notion of senior pollies there....a good time not to have your pants down unless it is with a girl in your hotels room!

I will leave it at I agree to disagree with the importance or revelence of the Net affecting the recent crackdown as this point has already been beaten to death, but will add some additional points: 1. Ten years ago the farang nightlife was confined to three main areas (Patpong, Nana & Cowboy) All three of these locations are relatively low profile. During the last few years this has spread out via Clinton plaza, Soi 10. Now you have BG with short shorts and belly shirts visible from the sidewalk and skytrain. Additionally, these places were often open in the afternoons, thus right in the Thai's faces. Since then these two places have been demoslished. 2. The 2:00 AM closing time now have pushed the parties into the streets so at 2:15 Nana Hotel parking lot and surrounding Soi's contain BG's looking for customers and by that time mostly drunk farang'sin mass. Not a pretty picture. 3. DG actually makes some good points. Work is afoot to clean up the city. Plans are already made to round up all Soi Dogs and beggers and move them out of the area for APEC. IMHO on both a terrorist threat level and a Thai Social Order Police crackdown threat all three venues represent high risk from now until the end of APEC. As DG says time to move to member clubs, Soi 33 bars. and other lower profile venues. I do not think the high-ened MP are risky as they have made moves to hide most girls behind the glass to the back rooms and the raids would mostly result in many Thai's being caught in the net. The farang is the cause of these problems. So beware. BTW the littering fine has been increased from 200 badt to 2000 badt.
