It's not the flash alone... just last week I was reviewing pictures (outdoor - overcast shade) taken at a company outing and I was stunned at how bad my favorite clerk looked. In person she is remarkable, with a magic smile... the photos (4 or 5 of them) all made her look ordinary at best. It has something to do with the natural animation that most Thai women possess... the way they move, the way their hair falls, facial expressions and (need I add) smiles... this is very difficult, maybe impossible, to capture on film. I would be classified as an "advanced amateur" photographer (closet full of Nikon & Rollei gear, darkroom, 35 years of screwing with it) and I have taken hundreds of TG shots... bargirls, hookers, friends... and damn few exposures do the subjects any kind of justice. A frustrating mystery.

What a ridiculous generalisation. I can think of several TGs that photograph like models but are actually no more than 8s in real life. Come to think of it I can think of a couple of models that are no more than 8s in real life. As someone who loves to pick up girls from the internet, I am constantly shocked by girls who have sent me glorious photos turning out to be dogs.
When I say photograph - I mean photos taken by me and I am a crap photographer with a crap camera. I will PM you a few if you like.
Admittedly TGs look a lot prettier in bars than they do in the harsh light of day. That is because it is relatively dark and the gogo bars usually use red lights which hide the blemishes on their skin.

I agree with you about the natural animation in these ladies. Of all the hundreds of photos (hey, digital is cheap) I have of my TGF, only a few really do her justice. Like you, I'm not a complete newbie to photography.
I recall on photo of my TGF taken by my buddy the first night I met her in her workplace. She's wearing all her garish warpaint, that looks so good under club lights. But under flash it looks like clown makeup. She removed all that before we left for my hotel, so I never noticed it until my buddy showed me the photo later. Hey, it was my first night in LOS (I took the sucker punch full force, lol!) and I think my eyes were having trouble focusing, ha!
With my little Nikon, I've been able to take some movie clips of my TGF. These are some of my favorites, because one can see the waves of emotion sweeping across her face as she tries to vamp for the camera but is too shy to do it. In one, she is posing on a beach, trying to act sexy in some undies she picked up at Robinsons, then starts laughing, waves off the camera, and walks off screen. It's an hilarious little vignette. Another is a little movie of her at a park upcountry surrounded by fields of beautiful flowers. Her long black hair is blowing in the breeze, and she has the most serene expression.
I've been able to capture few of those kinds of things in stills, so I think you're right, some of the allure of these girls is in their vivacious personalities. By comparison, I do have some photos of some Chinese lady friends that are just snapshots (even indoors) and they are much prettier pictures.
A good friend of mine takes photos at what I would call National Geographic quality (damn, I'm jealous) and he has the same issues with the Thai ladies. He seems to think it is in the light, makeup, setting, and post-processing. Regardless, it's a mystery to me too, but a fun one to work on.
