Seems to me its all about politics and getting votes.
The sex industry is an easy target - it costs nothing to "crack down" on the venues, just tell the police to get to it and hey presto headlines, reports, international media interest, tv news, the whole three ring media circus - there is no such thing as bad publicity when you are a politician.
And if the tourist industry of Thailand really is in meltdown mode then we can't really do anything about terrorism or the after effects of SARS but we can shift the blame and be seen to be doing something about the "real problem" which is the perception of Thailand as the whorehouse of Asia - that's why people have stopped coming here, no other reason - and now we have a big man who is going to do something about it.....he'll get your vote won't he? İJust politics, which is only really about looking after your next term, why would they care who gets hurt?

I believe that we will hear of several examples in the near future, of westerners caught in acts with say 18 year olds in places like phuket, pattaya and bangkok, and servely dealt with. I can also see raids on bj bars as a possibility!..NOW more than ever is a good time to double check that girls id card..if you think she is younger than the 20 she says.
Where do you get the impression that it is illegal to have an 18 year old girl? A lot of people seem to have this misconception, but I've never seen anyone provide a bit of evidence that this is a real law.

This provides us with an answer that MAY be technically correct, but is practically useless.
Remembering that we're talking about Thailand, where a whole BLOCK was bulldozed by the army, at the behest of an influential citizen, it should surprise no one that the presumption that a girl you met in a bar, who is less than 20 years old, is being PAID for sex, will be used by the men in brown to further their cause du jour. İThat cause might be 'tea money', although most farangs will cough up a LOT more than enough for a BOATLOAD of tea to avoid the kook. İOr, it might be time to appease the higher ups, who have a PR agenda, and need a farang to make an example of. (<- Thor - this is one of those cases. Coulda said "of whom to make an example", but it sounds too pussy-like).
So, aside from belligerent hair-splitting, what's your point?

This isn't the ideal forum for this but given the last few comments, well heres my two'pennyworth.
I have just come back from a biz trip (and fortunately am back again next week).
This trip I spent only with Thai friends so no time for hanky-panky 
I spent a long evening talking with two 24/25 yr old Thai girls. One a dentist and one a vetrinary so i guess they'd be mid-soc rather than hi.
After eating I suggested going to Q bar as this was once touted as a "quality" place. They looked at me in sheer horror which started a long conversation. They regarded Sukhumvit as completley off bounds for the reasons I will explain.
They suggested Silom. Now as some will know from my previous posts I consider Patpong to be the "sleaziest" of the areas and so I asked them why they were happy to go there. The (shortened) answer was as follows
Patpong = Tourists and sex= OK, just a bit of a laugh.
Sukhumvit = Sex Tourists or to use their words "full of low life farang".
I found this argument rather intriguing to say the least. Next day i was in Sukh (My appt is on Soi 24) so I "looked". Possibly for the first time. I "looked" at the punters rather than the goods - and you know what they are right. I KNOW that the guys here often talk about the need to dress smartly and be polite etc, but have a good look in Nana etc - unshaven, scruffy shorts, old trainers abound!! Drunkeness, and thats at 11 in the morning! Low life indeed seeemd to be everywhere!!
Their "attitude" to "prostitutes" had to be heard to be believed - NO amount of arguing about "if Thailand looked after the Isaan farmers this wouldn't happen" would sway them - girls who sold their bodies were simply the lowest of the low as far as they were concerned. Both had paid their own ways through uni without rich parents and neither had considered P4P. I was a little shocked but without getting abusive about their so called democracy I was a little stumped for evidence.
By the way - did you know that less than 5% of the Thai sex industry involves "thai on foreigner" - 95% of it is Thai on Thai and you and I will probably never even see that!! - just an afterthought lol

Oh and by the way, yes it IS illegal for a westerner to haver sex with a Thai under the age of 19. the age of consent in Thailand is 15 but that applies only to Thai on Thai. Under 19 is just a small fine and they have staggered rates, Under 15 is prision and under 13 it means LIFE!!
Dun risk it guys - EVER!! As the economy shrinks, more and more hotel workers etrc are reporting things to the boys in brown to pick up the bounty money. Even if they look 19 guys go for 20+ cos u can bet ur bottom dollar shes not.

I wear shorts when on vacation in the USA, England or anywhere else. I wear jeans and not shave on weekends. That is just the way some of us are. Appearance is not very important to some as long as the clothes are clean and the person doesn't smell. I make good money, but I don't want to wear a suite unless I have to, specially on vacation.
BTW I don't see Thai men dressed any better.

1) Thai men are not guests in their own country. İYou are a guest in Thailand.
2) The Thai men you see are the lowest classes. İThai business people generally have a high standard of grooming.
3) Like it or not, EVERYONE is judged by their appearance. İDon't care? No problem, just accept what goes with it.

I stick a 1000 baht bill on my bald head for a 1st time imression. I respct what HS and BKK said. When I am conducting business I am dressed up, but I am sure that even those Thai business men dress down on there vacation and relax.
How we dress is not the problem, maybe it's more how we act.
