You're forgetting that said bar isn't making $120,000 a month every month of the year. In fact, I'd contend that this is a best case scenario that only applies for maybe 4 months of the year.

With the same bar now having to pay $30,000 in rent every month (regardless of how well it does), do the math. Suddenly it's not such a gold mine anymore, except to those who own the lease... And I would contend that the 9 year leases are less to benefit the bar owners, but more so the landowners, to show "long-term profitability" and cash flow to potential buyers. Everything paints the picture of Nana being fattened up for eventual sale - to buyers outside of the families, for an unsustainable premium price that the then new owner will end up stuck with.

Considering the rent of said bar is now $15000 a month, and not $30000, that puts it at having to serve about 125 drinks in the 12 hours they are open each day to pay the rent. Double that for the other expenses, and about 20 drinks an hour covers total expenses.

Then given that said bar averages on a conservative count of 500 drinks during that 12 hours a day over the course of the year it does add up still very nicely.

Wasn't there talk of 1 million baht / mont rent? That's what I am basing the figure of $30,000 on.

Additionally, you are assuming 20 drinks an hour for 12 hours, 24/7 for 12 months.

If you assume that they make about $3 a drink in profit, that comes out to 240 drinks x $3 = $720 *a day*.

$5,040 a week
$20,160 a month
$241,960 a year

That certainly looks pretty nice.

But let's look at the reality, and that is that low-season, floods, unexpected political conditions, and the police asking for their slice, will cut into this profit.

I would contend that you will only only turn that $20,160/month for maybe, at most, 3-4 months of the year (Oct/Nov/Dec) with probably another 3-4 months of near nothing. I have seen the very popular bars in Nana virtually empty during bad seasons.

This is when you need to use the profits from the fat seasons to support your business. The remainder, you will, maybe, break even.

Mind you, I'm not saying that bars like Big Dogs or Morning 2 Night are not profitable - obviously they are (and are far cheaper to run than a GoGo bar), but it's not all raining Baht....

Most go-go bars don't operate for 12 hours at all. In fact, most of them are dead before 8-9 pm. And they close at 1-2 am... so that's about 6 hours. A very small window to get customers.

I'd love to see a go-go bar business plan.

I used to enjoy sitting in pharoah watching the girls returning from st all night.This could explain the trend towards short time or as many as possible in a night. Looking at the above equations though and bf at 800 baht I can understand a gogo trying to persuade the girls that repeated st is better than lt. But I must admit the bf is one of the things I find irritating about bars and gogo 's.

That an the habit of trying to get me to buy drinks for them all the whole night,its easy to rack up a large tab and you need the cash with you. As I use st hotels I need enough which is a minimum 10k a night or more.After one or two nights of this my hotel front is a better option and they all pass by on the way to work or from work in soi 4 .
