Can NOT say my experience on Soi 33 was a positive one. On my very first trip to LOS I spent some time in the Ava Pub on Soi 11 and did meet a couple of attractive girls who spoke reasonable English, and I thought they were a cut above the GOGO bars. However, now that I have made several trips and hit almost all the bars on Soi 33, NEP and Soi Cowboy, and, on occasion, back to the Ava Pub, I canNOT see the quality you are talking about. Oh, once in a while you will see a real looker on Soi 33, but once in a while you will see a real looker in the AngelWitch. The advantage to the the GOGOs is you get to see what is in the "package," before you take it home. I have no problem with the prices, I don't worry about what something cost if I feel I'm getting "my money worth." I just don't see ANY "perceived" value on Soi 33 for the money spent.
I have YET to meet a girl on Soi 33 that I feel is any better looking than a one or two I've met in the AngelWitch or the first two, mentioned above, from the Ava. By the way, the Ava Pub continues to slide downhill, in my humble opinion. In the last three trips it just seems to get worst. The mama-san has changed each trip. The music is horrible and I've seen better looking girls on Sukhumvit Road at 3:30 AM. The current mama-san has driven away the attractive girls that once worked there and what she has brought in is just plain street trash. I've seen better in Hollywood Two or the Madarin.

Just that.
As I passed Christie's I noticed an attractive girl sitting out front and she gave me a big smile.
I walked on and hit a few places down that side of the street and up the other side. As I was passing Christie's on my way back toward Sukhumvit Road I spotted her
again from the other side of the street. What the hell, I said to myself, buy the poor girl a drink. smile. So I crossed the street and asked if I could buy her a drink.
She gave me the big smile and said, yes. We went inside to the bar and she ordered a beer, as did I.
Her English wasn't much better than my Thai, so it didn't take long to run out of things to say to each other, so I asked for the check. The bill was for two
beers at 160 a piece and a charge of 360 baht, for a total of 680 Baht. I asked what the 360 Baht was for and was told it was for talking to the girl. That since she worked in "reception" and I brought her inside, I had to pay to have her sit with me and have a drink. I refused to pay it. I have NEVER ANYWHERE been charged to "buy the girl a drink," that is suppose to be built into the high price you are paying for the "lady drink." The amount wasn't a problem, it was the Principle. I told them I would pay for the beer, but I would NOT pay the 360 Baht. Told them they were a bunch of thieves. They immediately backed off and said paying for the beer would be fine. I gave them a
1,000 Baht note for the beer. When they gave me the change I took it out of the tray, rolled it up and gave it to the girl I bought the drink for, and walked out of the bar. I will NEVER go back into that bar, and, as I've said before, I don't see anything special about the bars on Soi 33 other than the upholstery. I've seen better looking girls, who speak better English, in just about any of the bars I patronize in BKK, but, then, I haven't been in them all. ;-)

I've got to show respect to you. I haven't accomplished that in 20+ years.... As you were in Christie's in February (I guess the first bar you hit there) a major accomplishment.

Ah, now we are getting personal. "Brainless"
"Matter of good taste" My, don't you have
a high opinion of oneself. I do know the difference between elegance and a "slutty looker"
but putting a girl in a simple black dress with a
string of white pearls does NOT make a princess out
of a farm girl. That is what you are getting on
Soi 33, the same farm girls in nice dresses, which
underneath are the same tattoos and
motorcycle accident scars you will find on bar
girls everywhere in LOS. You just might
find a real "pearl" on Soi 33, but your chances
are not much better than any other
"adult entertainment venue" in Bangkok.
Girls with beauty and "class" will always
stand out regardless if they work on Soi 33
or NEP. And, one should remember,
the determination of beauty is very subjective.
People don't even see the same shade of
of the color red, let alone agree on what they
consider a beautiful woman or what constitutes
"good taste." "Beauty IS in the thighs of the
beholder."
Say whatever you need to say to
fool yourself into believing you are not getting
monetarily screwed over on Soi 33. To each
his own, as they say.
I have always preferred the simple elegance
of a pretty girl in black dress with the white
pearls and when I see one and have a chance
to talk to her, I'll pay her bar fine. Can't
say I've seen that many.
And, Oh, you can hit every bar in NEP and
Soi Cowboy in one trip. It just takes
either a high tolerance for alcohol and/or a high
threshold for boredom. Been there, done that,
and most of them are not worth walking into, but
the bars change almost overnight. What is a dive
this week, could well be the hottest place in town
next week or next month or next year.
Whatever floats your boat.

Have to agree with you Sanook.
I like Soi 33 but I do not think the women are any better than those in NEP/Cowboy. Some may be better educated but I know some who finished school at 12yrs old.
I have met plenty of intelligent girls in NEP. They only need a few months to pick up language skills. Some of the girls in Soi 33 show the same lack of ambition as NEP girls, others are more focussed on what they want.
The Soi 33 girls look no different to NEP girls when out of costume.
The only advantage that the Soi 33 girls have is that they mix with local expats and can probably develop stronger 'customer-client' relationships which opens them up to new experiences. NEP girls tend to run down a narrower corridor.
Baht for Baht I think you get better value for money from your NEP girl if you want to keep it simple. BF's on Soi 33 are not worth it & you should be prepared to build up a 'relationship' (be it only over a few days) to ensure that you can avoid paying the BF. Who wants to regularly spend 1500Bt just to enjoy someone's company for the evening? You can take 3 different women from NEP for that & I am sure that one of them would be a success with you.
If you like your goods 'less-soiled' then Soi 33 may be for you. I like it because it is a good place to chat with women between 6-9pm. You can put your nudges in the bank for later & then move on to more popular places after the 9pm watershed.

I would also agree with both sanook and ds and of course there are exceptions. I am not the barfly I once was, but over the years I can recall quite a few girls who have worked in 33 having come from cowboy, Nana and patpong. There have also been those who have gone the other way, getting there familiarity of farangs in 33 then moving on to less inhibited areas. Makes me think of one the mamasans from the now not Leo bar who left 33 only to show up revealing all in midnite when they first started showing there some years back. certainly not lacking experience.. it would seem she had done it before.

The good doctor has gone quiet.
Where is he now?
There are some good bars in soi 33 and there are some horrors.
The Office is usually good value.
Personally I baulk at the bar fines but most of the girls I have met there are willing to meet you after work.THe atmosphere also provides a less in your face expereince than the gogos.It is nice to have the choice and option of going there.
It does make a nice change of pace from the other nightlife areas and I especially like the toilets in these places, worth the extra drink cost.
