Bingo, UK Punter.
As to the ambience of the different bars, I just walk in have a drink and move on to the next. I don't bother even remembering the names of the places unless I LIKE
what I see or something happens to make it memorable,
like getting charge 360 Baht to have a girl sit at the bar with me. I did like the "ambience" of....on the right side
of the Soi...down a ways....can't remember if it was
the Degas or the Dali....just remember it started with the letter "D." I can find it again, if interested. Had a ornate
heavy wooden door....I think. ;-)
I really don't care where you find your "woman of your dreams" for the evening, or how much you spend in your quest. Yes, some place have better "atmosphere," sorry, "ambience." Nicer furnishings, paintings (prints I'm sure) on the wall, girls in dresses rather than garter belts and panties, etc., etc., etc., to quote Yul Brenner, but this thing whole LOS thing is a man's fantasy come true, so do what you have to do to make your personal fantasy as real to you as you want it to be.

BTW I've been visiting Soi 33 for years (Christie only twice or so) and had never had anyone billing me 360 baht for talking to a girl. The most expensive LD was probably Bacchus (180 baht). LD all night as cheap as 90 baht (Madame Claude)...
You're sure you didn't have your 'newbie' face on in Christie's?

I'd heard before of a 3 drink minimum to get a girl out from behind the bar, but in practice at Renoir, Dali and Monet, girls always come out from behind the bar on one drink.

that's right at some places there is the 3 drinks rule to get the girls from after the bar to sit with you, also hardly ever enforced. most girls will come to the other side of the bar anyway once you give them a drink and they like you!

Did anyone else ever get charged like sanook, or did Bars on 33 try to rip off customers in any way?
Can you go to these Bars just to have a drink, or are you expected to talk to the girls and pay LD's?
Why would you go there?
O.k, I understand for the nicer ambience and so, and do the girls expect to be bfd there or are they happy with just keeping company.
Is the concept like a gogo bar but as said before diff. ambience....... mainly to take girls out.

The principle is similar to Go-Go's - you like the girl, you pay the bar fine! Then it changes slightly. Read previous answers for enlightenment.
You can definitely go to these bars with no expectations from the management or the girls for a drink- this is why I like these places. The girls are more willing to talk to you at face value. However, you can not do this too often if you expect 'results'.
Except for the 'ambience' you could say they are the same as Cowboy/Nana. Some bars will pad the bill, others are genuine. The girls will pretend to be something special but, in reality, they are not much different from Cowboy/Nana - some good,some bad!

When I read his story, that is the first time I have ever heard of this happening on Soi33, and I've never experienced it. I have many times brought a girl from outside the door into the bar to have a drink with me.

In some places, there are more expectations of buying LDs than others. BluBBQ, for example, I'm told by the owner that the girls there are not allowed to ask or hint for a drink. Richmond is pretty low-pressure. Same for Monet (I like the girls at Monet, lots of them). Santana is the opposite, I've had LDs ordered there without my permission. And the girls at the Office, I've found, will pound them down as fast as they can, then order another. Like most other bars in BKK, if you go in there buying a bunch of ladydrinks right off the bat, your bill will get high very fast, as the girls will see you don't care anything about how much money you spend. Just decline to buy if they ask and you do not want to. You can always move on, you will find a place you like better.
If I talk to a girl for awhile and like her, I will buy her a drink. I don't think it is fair (or much fun for me or her) for me to talk to a girl for 20 or 30 minutes without buying her a LD. This is the way the girls make money, and they are a little more fun if you've done something to put 25-40 baht in their pocket.

As a general rule, I think far less of the girls on Soi33 (percentage-wise) are BFd than in a gogo. The *average* punter doesn't walk into a Soi33 place, point to a girl and take her for a ST (although this has happened). Also, some of these girls are not prostitutes, and some of them do not want to think of themselves as prostitutes, so some of them will not go to bed with a customer. You should ask about this before BFing them, if this is your intention, so there are no disappointments.
It's probably a safe statement to say that a vast majority of Soi33 customers do not BF a girl.
Go to a few Soi33 places during happy hour (before 9pm) and see for yourself, you might like it, you might not. 9 times out of 10, I'm out of there by the end of happy hour, with my wallet intact, and I've had a good start to the evening. I'll be glad to take you around there if I am in town.
Even a cheap charlie can have a good time there during happy hour.
One more thing, almost every gogo looks kind of the same. The Soi 33 bars are laid out quite differently. Some are more "elegant" (Goya, Dali, Monet, Christie), some are more informal (BluBBQ, Richmond, The Brick, The Office). Also the girls dress different at each bar (and on different days), not all long dresses. Snoop around, you might find something you like.

The girl I BF'd out of Soi33 last week does not drink alcohol unless it is demanded of her. She says if she has two drinks, she falls asleep. Lately, I've been getting girls that either do not drink or have a problem because they drink too much. 
And no, she does not have a fancy name!
