Had a bad expereince a few years age with an "upstairs" bar in Patpong, was on my own and very green to BKK (and I still am), went in the bar to find 2-3 farangs , and just a few girls. had one very quick drink, and went to pay and got give a bill for 4,000 baht, stating price was for the show!. After much shouting and police being called I eventually got out 500 baht lighter.
I do not remember the name of the bar, but not a pleasant experience and one which has resulted in me never going back to the upstair bars without a "BKK expert"
The question:-
I am back in BKK in Nov/Dec, and as I haven't been to Patpong for sometime and plan to this time (normally stay around the sukhumvit area), Does anyone recomend "upstairs show bars" that should be avoided, and some which are safe from con tricks?

happened to me when i visited an upstairs bar with a thai girl.
many stories of being ripped off on the board,i think the easy answer is to not frequent these places.

Sorry to hear your experience Ady.Unfortunately I have heard that nearly all upstairs bars in Patpong completely overcharge.
I went to one with my Thai friend(male) about 9 years ago.We only had 2 drinks each and they presented us with a bill for 1,500 baht.Well my friend wasn't having any of that and after much arguing they reduced the bill to 900 baht,still well over the top.
I haven't been to many upstairs bars there but one I know you don't get ripped off in is 'Penthouse' and they have a f_ck show and shower show there too.
But for real quality I wouldn't particularly recommend it.I took a girl from there once and she was a big let down,but of course that is only one girl.

I would also stay away from the upstairs bars in Patpong. They are still known to rip off people. Infact I did not go to any of the bars in Patpong. I just walked around. Go to the bars in the Sukhumvit area.

Got good references about SUPER GIRL as Blade mentioned in his post. However, the general recommendation is to try to stay away from the second floor "bars"....just a suggestion....

Like most generalizations, a blanket condemnation of anything above the ground floor on Patpong simply doesn't fly.
Takara Massage is upstairs. Penthouse, Supergirl and Lipstick are upstairs and show bars and no ripoff.
Rose and Kangaroo blowjob bars are upstairs and no ripoff.
And that's not an exhaustive list.
I'd avoid any upstairs SHOW bar except those three. Anyplace else, not a show bar, is no hassle.
With the show bars that try a ripoff the way to proceed is to pay the ripoff bill, get a receipt, and go fetch the Tourist Police. You will get your money back. No screaming, no fighting. The one time this happened to me, I reached into my pocket, showed my Thailand Foreign Press Card with the Royal Krut emblem on the cover, and the opposition folded their tents. I left after paying for just what I drank (1 drink).

I would also add Queen's Castle II tot he safe bars. I have been there often and never been ripped off even once. The girls are ok....a couple of cuties......and all with good attitude. They are a bit pushy at first but that's part of the game. Anyway, the management is honest.

IMHO, any bars that is managed by the Kings Group (German Boss) in Patpong is safe and hassle free. Kings Castle 1.2.3, Kings Paradise, Queen Castle etc etc are all owned by the Kings group.
i f u really want to venture to other establishment, always pay first when yr drink is served. if the bars have shows, ask them if theres a charge for the seats or any other cover or hidden charges.
before there were the Tourist police, if u got ripped off from a certain bar, the local guys in the brown uniform whom u summon to help u will usually ask u to compromise a certain sum of the ripped-off bill, and part of what u pay goes to them after u have left!!!

The upstairs bars at Patpong are a great place for tough guys (who think they are tough) to go for a little test of manhood. Just a little profanity and perhaps some pushing and shoving (maybe a thrown beer bottle into the bar stock) would be enough I think to get your test started. Running out the door before you lay out everyone in the bar means you fail the test. I doubt it would escalate as far as anyone killing you, ... I mean where would they hide the bodies (in the middle of downtown)?
SERIOUSLY... those upstairs bars have had a bad rep for a long time. For both locals and foreigners getting ripped off. Avoid if possible.
