I'm not an expert on how it works, but here's what I was pondering while I was at work:
Let's say a popular bargirl gets an average of 7 lady drinks a day in a decent go-go bar.
7 lady drinks X 90B (cost per drink) = 630B in total
Why does the mamasan pressure customers to barfine them at 400-500B when she can be making more income from drinks?

How long did it take for her to get those 7 drinks? Do all of them get 7 drinks so fast/so slow? If she got the 7 drinks slowly and we are approaching closing time....go for the BF as there is not much time left for her to get many more drinks. And if she got them fast ....BF for ST and she can be back fast to make more drinks or another BF.
Dont forget that the girl herself is after the big bucks of the ST or LT, and if the girls didnt have such big incentive they wouldn't be in the bar in the first place and if the girls are not there, then customers who can buy them drinks wouldn't even go there to buy them drinks. So.......
I really haven't thought much about it. But what I just wrote above is the first thing that popped into my mind after reading your OP.

I suppose the mamasan (like the BGs) will try to form some sort of impression of each customer. Is he just there to drink & ogle? If so, just keep him supplied with good company so he'll stay sitting there with the drink orders (& LDs) flowing nicely. Is he out on the prowl anxious to hook up asap? If so, you'd better get him to BF one of your better girls pronto before he pisses off after one beer to BF someone else's instead.
The ideal customer, of course, will drink himself into a stupor, go completely mad with the LDs and then accidentally BF the least popular girl in the bar.

Paying a bf only means that she is gonna stay with you. If ST or LT follows then so be it. Accepting the bf certainly implies what follows will be up to you.
So ideally, you will pay the bf, stay for some more drinks, then ST.
All that said, the general rule is that a baht in the hand is worth two in the bush.( no pun intended)

I agree with everything that Smegma, Arcadius, and Dave have said on the subject. I just wanted to add that I'm sure on average that only a few females average of even come close to 7 lady drinks a day.
It's much easier for the mamasan to get the bar fine then work at getting a customer to drinks a lot. ha ha ha!! And the bg's gotta get paid, so they don't make much off the lady drinks. Hense, a push to get a client to take the bg's out.

Also you have to remember that not all of the bars are decent enough to share part of the BF with the ladies. Many don't so that 400-500 baht all goes into the owners pocket. As far as lady drinks are concerned the ladies my receive around 30 out of the 90 baht which is a long way from helping them pay their bills.
One other thought which isn't very nice but probably does take place. Most bars require the ladies to meet certain drink and BF quotas. If the ladies don't meet those quotas then the owners will cut their monthly salaries, sometimes as much as half. Would it be so hard to imagine some of those managers pushing customers to BF the ladies in order to prevent the lady from meeting her drink quota, thus giving them an excuse to cut their salary that month. Not a cool thing to do but TIT. Peace

i see many references about the girls having to meet quotas on LD's and BF's.
this has always been a mystery to me.
i make friends of the girls and the bar owners and when i mention it,i get the puzzled looks and the explanation that not is the case.
is this a BKK thing?.

I suspect that the BF and drink quotas, like the penalties for unpunctuality, are designed to ensure that the bars can keep functioning. The girls complain about these things, but they may be necessary from a management pov.
Actually, I think the 'hostessing' side of things (which is where LDs come in) is appallingly managed at many of the GG bars. The girls either bounce you the moment you walk in, or else sit around gassing & ignoring many customers altogether. I'd say only about a third of the GGs (in BKK anyway) can be relied on to get this roughly right. I don't know why more attention isn't paid to these basics, as it would seem obvious that happy customers will be inclined to stay (and keep spending) in the bar a lot longer. If they get fed up, they'll have one drink then piss off next door.

Well, I was told that the barfines are not charged in the books. Thus, there is no need to pay tax on those bar fines. The bf is net for the establishment. The more of these, the better for the owners....
IMHO another point is that not all the girls get 7 drinks per day. Some of them really struggle with any minimal quota of drinks per day/month. Thus, the only way to improve their plain salary of 6K-7K per month is by banging customers and the bar should let them go.
