There is a lot of hype about guys heading up to the upstairs in Patpong and getting presented with huge bills on leaving. Is this common? Where to avoid, and how to deal with it.
I speak very little Thai, and have been to BKK several times, but not to these places - would visit next time - thanks

I'm no expert on these shows, so please take my advice at face value...
There has certainly been a steady stream of warnings from many regulars to avoid the upstairs shows in Patpong. However, on sticks old page it seems to imply that the worst scams are far less likely now than before. I've also read a couple recent guide books that thought it was okay to visit these shows as long as you kept your wits about you and reported any impropriety to the tourist police.
Bottom line, you're taking a risk. However, you can probably avoid nasty surprises if you just keep your cool and don't carry too much cash up there. Only take what you're willing to lose and if things go badly, report it to the tourist police.
Nothing I've heard about these shows ever impressed me much. The girls are way past their prime, the shows are somewhat demeaning to them, and some of the tricks and gags have the potential to cause harm to any patrons in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you do go there, go for a laugh. Just don't expect anything terribly erotic.

Just stick to the King's Group bars. They will have their crown logo displayed on all of their establishments. King's Group has a good reputation of not ripping anyone off so the upstairs bars operated by King's Group should be generally safe. Here are the upstairs bars that charge no enterance fee:
- Queens Castle (King's Group)
- Queens Castle II (King's Group)
- Pussy Galore
- Concert
- Kangaroo Club (known for blow jobs)
- Pent House
- Supergirls
- Super Queen
Stay clear of these bars as they have an enterance fee:
- Firecat
- Superpussy

During my visit to Patpong, I did get a bit pissed off at all the show touts, but wanting to experience a show I did go to Queens Castle. The bar was fairly empty, and I was with a few other guys, but the place itself was decent, and they certainly didn't rip us off. It is worth checking out if you want to see a show. the naked BG skwirming on my lap was an added bonus.
When they fired the darts, they did make sure they aimed at a blank wall. The same can't be said for the banana. I consider myself a casualty of friendly fire. Very friendly fire ...

A long time ago in a place far away, I saw the "banana show." It was not especially erotic, but the pure amusement factor jumped when about half of the fruit got stuck inside the girl. She just couldn't quite figure out how to retrieve it, and eventually gave up. Something about that nearly brought me to tears. Few times in my life I've laughed that hard.
