Hi Everybody, I usually end up in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand during the NHL playoffs. I have looked for a bar where I can catch some games, but have not had much luck. The Canadian and the US Embassy had no idea where to look. There must be one bar in the whole of Bangkok that has hockey, even if it is a two day old tape. There is Something appealing about having a cold beer in 34 degree weather and watching a sport on ice. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Sorry mate, I must admit to watching most sports, but I can never remember seeing live Hockey on anywhere in Bangkok. ESPN would be your best bet for that I'd guess. Try researching the UBC website http://www.ubc.co.th/default.aspx?

Oh boy, you might as well bring your skis with you expecting it to snow in BKK. Espn does regional broadcasts throughout Asia and since you don't see to many Thais carrying hockey sticks and skates on the way to practice, you are not going to watch too much hockey either. My suggestion is to log in with a Canadian news site, like Toronto Star, then at least you get up to the minute scores as they happen. What do I do? Well I switched sports. I now am football (soccer) crazy. Once in a while I squint my eyes and pretend everybody on the field is skating. After about 12 beers....they are!

Thanks guys, I figured that it was a no go but what better place to ask. I looked at the UBC site and no hockey. I may have to get a buddy to copy to DVD a game or two (if there are any good ones) and fed-ex them to me. I could then find a bar with a DVD player and start introducing the Thai nation to hockey. That actually sounds like way too much work for me on holiday. I agree that football (soccer) is a great sport and I think I should watch more of it. However, it would have been interesting to see how some of the girls reacted to a sport on ice. Hell, a couple of years ago I had trouble trying to explain what a furnace is and that we need them when the temperature hits -33 C. It took 3 days, numerous beer, lots of Meehkong and 6 barfines. At the end we reached a compromise, the furnace was a hot air conditioner. Thanks again

I believe there's an ice rink in Bangkok, on the top floor of the WTC. Hockey is a great game to watch in person, but isn't as appealing on TV. My cousin was a former captain, leading scorer, and MVP for University of Wisconsin hockey team that finished third nationally (USA) in 1974.

Mmm. Ice hockey. The thing with hockey on TV in Thailand is that it changed 2-3 seasons ago. About three years ago, ESPN Asia regularly showed one live game per week, usually a Wednesday night game, shown in Thailand around 7:00 am Thursday morning. And during the playoffs, they would show 2-3 games a week. Now there are no regular season games on tv at all, but during the playoffs, at least last spring, about 2 games a week. So it's not that bad, but of course the time is not very good, no bars are open at 7am so you'll need to stay in a hotel that has UBC Channel 32 (ESPN). But I actually got to see two games from the Habs vs. Bruins series last spring. The one with the hit on Zednik and all. Man, playoff hockey, Habs vs. Bruins.. Although I'm a big fan of English soccer, there was something pretty damn special about watching those games live. And for the record, I'm a Canadiens fan thru and thru. As for playing hockey in Thailand, there are two rinks in Bangkok; top floor of World Trade Center (which is changing its name to Central World Plaza due to a change in ownership, but will probably be known as "Worl Trey" to Bangkokians anyway) and then there's another one in a suburbian mall, not sure which, Central Bang-Na or Central Bangkapi, I think the latter. There are even teams such as the Flying Farangs that practice regularly, and there is an annual hockey tournament in Chiang Mai and a new one in Bangkok that I think was inaugurated just a month or two ago. I wish I'd brought my Bauers with me.

SetLaew, Nice games to see live! I used to live in Boston for a couple of years in the 80's and went to a few Habs / Bruins games. Someone that my parents knew got me into the dressing room after one of the games to meet all of the Canadiens. I even managed to get Larry Robinson to sign his stick (I was 14 or 15) and give it to me and then I got Lafleur to sign it as well. Pretty cool for a kid. I will check the tv playoff schedule before I go in April and see what's up.

Hello...Gents, Just wanted to reactivate this thread in the hopes that things have changed in the years since I last inquired. Anybody seen anywhere showing NHL hockey? Playoffs begin as I make my way over there and I certainly enjoy a good game. Cheers, Herodotis
