there is always a risk of getting a std. But you can minimize that risk by practicing safe sex. It doesn't matter if the girls are from a bar or not. A lot of the girls who work in the bars do freelance work after houirs anyway.

A perfect place to post one of my favorite true tales.
One of my buddies, John Adams, was in 1993-94, US Consul General in the Phillipines. He previously had been Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, and before that, Consul General in Hong Kong.
In June 94 he was visiting Bkk and told me the following:
That year the US Navy had a tropical disease survey team in the PI doing something or another. They finished, but had time and money left over and were in no hurry to depart, so they proposed to the country team (of which the CG was part) that they do a HIV survey among Filipina prostitutes.
At that time and for some years, WHO and other noisy AIDS activists were saying that the PI, and Thailand, were rife with AIDS/HIV and were throwing around numbers like 70% infected (among sex workers).
Well, the country team said Yes, the Navy went ahead and blood tested 4000 professional sex workers in Makati, or maybe it was Ermita, I don't remember. They EXPECTED to get a horror story, per WHO. Know what they really found?
One girl. One girl HIV positive out of 4000.
So, they decided to go down market, and they tested 5000 sex workers in a much cheaper district.
7 girls out of 5000 positive.
Altogether, 8 out of 9000, or <0.1%.
So, what does this tell us about media hype and WHO propaganda? LIARS. NGOs? BULLSHIT ARTISTS.
Now, guys, don't be fools, vulcanize your tools. But things are not as grim as some would have you believe.
This isn't politically correct but it is true.

Is it my imagination or did something to that effect reach the press? It sounds really familiar. It also fits with my own views. I was sure that the scene here would be devastated by HIV and after observation over years I have been very happily proven wrong.
Of course I echo your advice to be safe.

I never saw anything about this (PI USN AIDS survey) in the press. I would have liked to; and I am pretty sure it must be a matter of public record, unless the USN decided to suppress the news as part of what appears to be public policy, e.g., to scare the hell out og the general population about this subject.
It might be interesting to talk to a Navy flak (PIO) at the Embassy or JUSMAGT or the USIA about this, file a FOIA request if necessary.
When I decided to move here in '89 I was told, only half jokingly by friends back in Wash DC, that I'd be dead of AIDS ( to be contracted here) in a short time.
Well, not yet. Neither dead nor positive.

Well no doubt I'm confused. But I'm almost certain I remember reading about there being a much lower incedence of HIV around the Phillipine bases than had been expected.
I was very foolish, very often, for a very long time. No POS results for me either. Possibly most teriffying moment in life did not occur in Military despite hazardous duty:- first HIV test. When I went to get results, the doctor was genuinely concerned for me because I was so pale and shaky. All I could think about was how many people I might have murdered (and shamefully in the back of my mind, that I wasn't going to be able to have so much fun anymore.)
