Hi, Ive read on a couple of other forums that bars in Bangkok (maybe Thailand) may be shut for some days on the week of 31st January because of the general election...particularly the dates of 5th and 6th February. Anyone know what this is about?

Wed Feb 23 Magha Bucha Day. Bars shut.
This might be of particular interest to Amerekans because the Super Bowl is broadcast Monday Feb 7th at 6am (BKK time). I suppose that a few places will have the game, as that is after the "official" closing hours.

just to add, Patpong qualifies as a tourist attraction and therefore is usually still open even if only serving no booze when the others are shut.
Furthermore, a few discrete bills, and you can be drinking liquor in a softdrink cup no problem.

This is not good for those of us there on a vacation! So if all bars are closed. I assume discos also? Where are we to find some girls, They can't all be going home for a visit?

You could try and find a girl that you get on well with in the days leading up to it and arrange to stay with her for those days. Plus if Waxhead is correct about Patpong being able to open but not serve alcohol, then the girls will still be available there. If not I am sure that the freelancer mile along Sukhumvit will have girls hanging around as always.
I was out of the country at the time of the Bangkok elections when similar rules applied, but I am sure some of the more experienced guys here can advise you. Find it hard to believe that there will be no girls out there at all.

NOt just bars, as in go go bars - ALL BARS.
Night clubs included.
The town shuts down the night before the election.
But as I said... PP is still ok - as it is a tourist location. Khao San the same.
but no liquor.
Massage parlours also closed on that night I suspect.

Good.... Guess I might have to see Patpong if I can not line up a girl beforehand. Don't care about the booze, I am here for the girls!
Guess I will have to read up some on Patpong? Never thought I would go there since I heard it was a rip off place for tourists?

Ironically, it is the only one of these places I go at all; usually lining up a trip to buy DVDs at the same time.
It definitely can be a tourist trap, but NEP is IMHO not really significantly different. The 2nd floor places are mostly to be avoided; stick to Camelot, KC1 and the other one next to it. Plenty of eye candy; I don't bar fine any girls from gogos or beer bars really, so I just go to drink and have a few laughs. For this PP is good; the quality seems higher than NEP, but it depends what look you like, the NEP look is far more Southern Isaan, which many people like.
I cannot guarantee though, but this is how it has worked in the past.

Ive only ever had good experiences from patpong. Granted that there are a few rip off bars but most have cheaper drinks and some have better looking women than NEP (not LBs!).

I agree with power24 and waxhead. I dont go to PP too often, but when I have I have had a top laugh, apart from the first time I went and I fell for the upstairs bar scam!! Also I find that attempts to pad your bin are more prevalent there, but as long as you keep your eye on it its fine. Makes a change from Cowboy or NEP and SOL makes a visit all the more enjoyable.
