Ahh, a post written after a bad experience in a bar. Will I spew forth negative opinions, a tirade of profanity, and accusations?

No. I'll keep this to the facts.
----------------
On Sunday, March 27th, Stickman posted a picture of Sukhumvit Soi 7 to his website. I happened to be online and replied as to what I knew to be pictured. I noted in the mail that it was terribly easy, and that as usual, I was too late. As it turns out, I was first and had won the prize:

"Actually, you are first this week so guess what, you win the 500 baht credit at Tony's! Well done!"

We confirmed what my name was, and I was told:

"You got it!
Just drop by Tony's Bar, any time in the next two weeks from Tuesday night onwards, tell them your name, show some ID and the prize is yours!"

That would be 2 weeks from March 27th. Tonight being April 6th, within the 2 weeks, is also the 2 year anniverary party for Tony's Bar. Perfect. I can stop by for some drinks and eat some free food too. I invite a friend of mine (a fellow BTF member) who had won the prize previously, and on said occasion, had invited me along. Fair is fair.

(Note: although you can buy lady drinks with the credit, you cannot buy a fellow punter's drinks.)

7:30pm, April 6th (ie, 2 hours ago), both of us show up. It's now been 7-8 days since Tuesday. I come in and my friend's waiting at a table. I sit down, and tell the waitress that I won the Stickman prize. She asks for ID, and I show her my passport - which she promptly runs off with to the front counter. Upon reflection, I realize that a bargirl had just ran off with my passport. So I run after her to the counter, where it's being examined by the cashier - who also has some sort of handwritten scrap of paper. She'd look at this paper, and then at my passport, and then back at the paper again. I began to think it had my name on it.

The cashier kept telling me that she couldn't get ahold of the boss to verify the prize winner. Eventually she gave me back my passport, and I sat down. A few minutes later, one of the girls said the boss would be back around 8 or so, and he could verify it.

So I drank a few drinks. Picked up the lady drinks for my friend. 3 drinks for me at 95 baht, 2 lady drinks at 90 baht = 465 baht total. My friend had 2 drinks himself. We both ate some of the food, I a bit more than he.

He check-bin's at 180 baht and pays his tab. I motion for them to do mine. They come back and demand cash. You see, they haven't been able to verify that I won the contest. I say no, no. I won. I don't need to pay. Go check.

Eventually, someone that would appear to be the acting manager (although apparently not the boss) came in. Asian features, australian accent. I'd noticed him out front when I got food - he was talking to me about what was available, and peeling back some of the plastic wrap. We discussed the matter of me having won the contest, and he stated that I should have printed out the email. Fair statement, but I pointed out that I could make up a fake email and print that - he himself should have some indication of who won the contest.

At this point, my friend starts trying to explain that when he'd won the contest 8 weeks ago, all he'd needed to show was ID (and in fact, that's all I was informed that I needed). Every time said friend started off with the phrase "when I won 8 weeks ago," the acting manager cut him off and said "that's too long ago," it's not valid anymore. (something to that effect). It seemed as though he was beginning to think that my friend was trying to claim the prize.

At this point, I tried to return the issue to me, the present winner - I said "no, no. you don't understand - he won before, and I won this time."

The man's response? "I don't give a f***, mate!" (direct quote), after which he walked back out of the bar. The bar staff was still clustered around our table.

My response: I pulled out a 500 baht note, threw it on the table, and said:
"Keep it. And f*** off."

My friend and I left at that point. At the BTS station, he got change and paid me for his lady drinks.

Agreed. When I'd gone there before with the same friend I went with this time, when he'd won the prize, it was (relatively) smooth sailing. They did take about 15 minutes to verify that he'd won.

But after that, no problems.

Did you get back to Stick with your experience at the bar and what did he say?

I one the stickman pic contest several times.....twice it was a load of mercahndise from some company....can't remember who they were, either |T shirts or condoms or whatever, twice I requested some stuff...twice it was out of stock, then I amde the mistake of getting them to clarify thet it was a double order as I'd won twice and I gave up. One of the times it had an extra bonus prize of some gel made by some guy in Bangkok. I contacted him, arranged a time to meet, he cancelled, then the next email received no response. I gave up on that also.

Gave up reading stickman ages ago.

Ditto - what did Stick say about, and did you submit the same story to him for publication as a reader report? Would be interesting to see if it gets published, but seeing as how Tony's is a sponsor, I have an odd feeling that this won't happen.

I posted to this forum, and then sent Stick the following email (a response to the message in which he told me all I needed was ID) :

---------
Hi Stick,

Stopped by Tony's bar tonight, and they acting manager rather rudely
declined my prize winnings, despite me having my passport with me for
ID. I had a bin for 465 baht; I threw down a 500 baht note and walked
out.

Why would you leave a big tip??

Being as kee-niao as I am, that's occurred to me as well.

I suppose the premise was that I wasn't trying to trick them, that I had in fact won the contest, and that their inability to handle something as simple as that had pissed me off.

It both was, and wasn't about money.

It was when I arrived - free 500 baht. And wasn't when I left - "f*** you and the horse you rode in on." (didn't say that, but that was my mentality)

In the end, even if the Thai employees there don't give a shit, I enjoyed the feeling of slapping down a bill, telling them to f*** off, and walking out - far more than I would sitting there waiting for my 35baht change. I'm sure I just looked like a prat to them - loss of face, angry farang, etc, etc. Made me feel better though, and that's what's important.

And technically, 35 baht is not that big of a tip for 465 baht bill. Although it's a lot more than I usually leave (just the natural coins; none of the 20baht bills exchanged into 2x10baht coins), I do see farang leaving tips like that fairly frequently, despite what I normally do.

Edit in a few minutes later:

Plus, I enjoyed the symmetry of it. 500 in, 500 out. I thought I'd won, but really I lost.

Well,

All I can say is that the report TJ has given is 100% accurate, as I was the person invited along.

When I had won previously, they took a little bit of time to verify this, but then everything was ok. This time they kept going on about how no one that was at the bar had been informed who the winners name was, despite the fact that the prize had to be claimed inside the two-week period and we were getting to the end of those two weeks.

All I care to comment on is the fact that we tried to resolve this issue, but as they didn't know who the winner was, they wanted TJ to cough up the email from stick "right here. right now" or he had to pay. That despite the fact that Stickman had already taken down TJ's details, which he was told was all he needed to show.
