Just been for a few beers in Big Dogs and a little cutie there kept me company. When it was time to check bin I asked if she was coming with me and the answer was a resounding yes (obviously she'd been hinting all night that I should take her) - barfine was quoted at 600 baht which I thought was a little high but what can you do. Guess this is the going rate around NEP even for beer bars (don't normally drink around there) ?
Then the bit that annoyed me... her pimp got involved... One of the older bargirls.. "what you take her for? short time? long time?" hmmmm I thought this seems a little odd... Surely I should be talking about this stuff with little cutie. "Long Time" says little cutie (right answer by the way). Next question lo and behold from the pimp "How much you give her?". That was enough - forget the barfine I'll go alone thanks.
Is it just me or is this out of order? Situation felt kind of unpleasant and pressured, I never usually get these kinds of hassles - usually it's as if the girls can tell I know what the going rate is (i'm quite generous actually). Is this standard practice for this bar or is it just this group of girls?
Sure hope little cutie knows that her friend scuppered her chances at an easy little earner with me tonight.
Am I making a big thing out of nothing? Possibly. Just got back to hotel so am a bit miffed. Comments?

ChrisO---never had this happen to me. I know of the place of which you speak. I wouldn't let it rub me....many Thais ask personal questions and mean no offense...I normally just give them a generic answer...such as: "we go for how long it takes" and "I give her my heart..." That type of stuff...Usually, the "pimp" will just give you that "smile" and shuffle off.
Bar fines are 600 bt now???? Damn... LS

I have seen this happen if the girl is fairly new, or they think you might not pay the going rate, or if the girls are very close and you have not clarified price and duration with the girl beforehand.
You probably could have told the pimp to go away, then talked to the girl. Or better yet, clarify price and duration before saying you will pay the barfine.

Guys, you are both probably right. The little cutie did claim she was new (but how many times have I heard that  ?)
It kind of wound me up that her friends had been hanging around and suggesting I should take her since I arrived, then started bargaining for her when the time came. I could have probably handled it differently. But mai bpen rai khrup.. big smile and move on.

I could see how that would be uncomfortable for you. With the time you invested in little cutie I wouldn't have turned away so quick. I would have turned the question around on the pimp. If it was too much, then I would have counter offered with what I would have been comfortable giving. If the pressure continued I would have walked. Oh well, many others for you to choose from.

Why would you get upset, you planning on marrying her or is this just a business transaction? My response would have been, I'm gonna take her ST and I pay 500. Then again I would have discussed price and services required before I pay bar. That's the kind of romantic fellow I am.

First of all 600 baht bar fine sounds over the top for a beer bar and secondly if another girl started to ask me personal questions I would have broken the rule about always being polite and told her to piss off and mind her own business. The bar fine is only 600 baht in Angel Witch, beer bars are normally 350 baht, at least that is what it is in the Golden Beer Bar opposite Big Dogs.

I've been quoted 500 baht from a beerbar on Suk. I just replied, "500 BAHT!!!, only 200 baht in Pattaya" - mamsan reply (no surprise) was "this not Pattaya, this Bangkok - pay bar 500 baht - same same everywhere" - I just laughed and bought her a drink. Didn't bf the girl, told mamasan "I not rich man".
Its all about having fun, no need getting upset by anything unless they 'actually' rip you off. I agree with BigD (this is starting to become a habit) - I think your mistake was not discussing $$ and clarifying LT or ST. The other girl was just looking out for the new girl.
I haggled a new girl in Phuket for 700 LT, not because I wanted to pay less, I just enjoy a friendly barter. When she counter offered with 700 to my 500 LT, I said I liked her and I'll pay 1000. She could have been offended with my low price - but that would have gotten her nothing - just like you.
