I was at the Taj Mahal tailor shop having a suit made, since I have to go to a Thai wedding on Sept 19th. Taj Mahal has been recommended by Skip, Koolbreez and others. This information might be old news to long-term LOS folks. But, not everyone qualifies for that designation. I was talking with the owner of the Taj Mahal, who has been at this location for 24 years. He told me that his property, as well as all the property up to and including the Morning Night bar and all of NEP, is part of a 30 year lease deal. The land is owned by a Chinese guy. (The tailor didn't know if this guy was still alive or not.). The Chinese guy sold a 30-year lease to an Indian guy. This Indian guy then sub-leased the land to many different people, including the tailor. Most bars in NEP are on year to year leases. The tailor's lease comes up at the end of this year. He expects to re-lease it for the remaining 6 years of the original 30-year lease agreement. However (the tailor told me) the Landmark Hotel wants to buy the property from the Chinese guy (or his heirs) and break all the leases. Both because the Landmark wants to expand and because NEP is an "eyesore" to the Landmark. The tailor is not too worried about his shop, since he owns another one just a block away, and owns the property under it. And, because he figures he can go to court and tie things up for 3 years if he wants. Anyway, all of this is a preamble to the question: What is the future of Nana Entertainment Plaza? Given the current political outlook, police, leasing agreements and other factors it doesn't sound very stable.

Interesting academic discussion, but does it really matter? Nothing is permaent, wether in LOS, or elsewhere, but alternatives and replacements invariably always materialize. Nature abhors a vaccuum, and so do bar and gogo girls.

Regardless of the politics, the land that NEP sits on will some day be developed into a high rise hotel, apartment, office, or shopping center. The land is too valuable for its current use, unless we see another meltdown in the Thai economy like in 1997.

The Sihanathathakul family for years have been rumored to be buying NEP to expand the Landmark. Maybe one day it might happen.

Speak for yourself I adore a vaccuum in bar and gogo girls. Speaking of eyesores, the Nana Hotel should be on the Landmark's list. BTW the Landmark will be building a food court soon in the lower floors. All resident businesses are not be permitted to renew their leases upon expiration.

I was told a few years ago that the people who own Nana are the same INDIAN family that owns Amari Hotels among other properties. Never any mention of Chinese ownership.

JA, The Indian tailor that I got this information from was one of the ones who tried to buy the land from the Chinese guy 24 years ago. The Chinese guy would not sell, but would lease to a single Indian guy. That Indian guy then leased to everyone else. All I have to go on is this Tailor's story.

Score one for the Duck, you are right. But that being the case when NEP goes the bar and gogo business will reappear somewhere else. You may have to go to a different part of BKK, you may even have to go to a different part of LOS. But in the end one can not fight nature. Tough luck for those punters and sex tourists with long-term leases in the Sukhumvit area...

I think all the tailors around there are somehow related. The Indian family I was discussing this with previously were very clear in their statement to me that they owned it as we were discussing other proerties such as the Sheraton Grande and Amari hotels. But then again, many can be subject to exageration on "ownership". A great question would be- where do you think Nana would resurface if they ever closed it down?
