Had some good times at Washington over the years. Was there last week at Silver Dollar and Texas...some nice girls still - not necessarily lookers but good company - but it feels pretty much on a downward slope...business not too good I was told.....any views?

Looked OK to me last few times I was there, of course I am not auditing the books for the owners.
Silver Dollar can be expected to go down hill as once Bobby Tooms died...let's just say his son Ned isn't half the man his father was esp from the neck up. He ought to sell out to someone more competent and retire to a life of doing Forrest Gump impressions.
Texan always seems busy when I am around...no not in a cause and effect sort of way. Pat Landry went back to the States and Fat George ain't no spring chicken but he has good managers and a loyal following. Lots of old soldiers and old spooks and old straphangers like me blow through there, some of them quite famous or infamous like Richard Secord or Jack Singlaub.
No Prob'm, same song different lyrics, as once Larry died, about 10 yrs ago, and Meow lost interest in it and sold out, the regulars quit patronizing it -- we went to see Larry as much as anything else -- so what's the point now?
I am in no position to comment on Bourbon Street as I shun the place, and it has been way too long since I have set foot in Wild c***ry (pun intended), POW or Square One, for me to have anything worthwhile to say, good or bad.
Basically Washington Square is an expat and retirees' hangout, and maybe that community is thinning out a bit. But there's a few shouts in us yet.
I don't get down there as often as when I was living on Soi 22 (duh!) but I do from time to time and not for the free lunches.

That's good to hear..WS has a unique atmosphere and as I said in my original post I've had some good times there. I 'discovered' it back in 1988 while wandering around with a mate. Texas LS was really buzzing then. It still serves up some great food at reasonable prices. And you can still find a few of the old-style Bangkok girls.

Of course I knew about WS being the hangout (in place of the late lamented LTD,-Tiger RIP!) but Secord and Singlaub? Really? Did you meet either? (Probably close personal freinds of yours. You are becoming one of my favorite characters in the movie that is my life.)

No never met either; I know that Secord was there in 94 promoting his book. Don't want to meet him though, he is not a socially acceptable sort in certain circles...he tried to get Bill Casey to give him a sitdown at CIA and Casey wouldn't even talk (well, mumble) at him.
Jack Singlaub I don't know that he has ever been in the place but it wouldn't amaze me. For those who maybe do not know General John Singlaub used to command US forces in ROK till he and Jimmy peanut farmin' Carter had some slight policy disagreements and Carter decided to do a lame imitation of Truman and fire the Commanding General. Now runs the World Anti-Communist League although they do seem to be running out of communists to oppose...also hunts for Yamashita's gold in the P.I.
Singlaub I would be delighted to buy a beer. We have mutual friends.
Secord I would rather shun, even though we also have mutual friends. The problem with Secord isn't Iran-Contra, in my book, it goes back to Laos and some of his activities there, but, now I am gossiping...

I was being gratuitously cruel. I don't suppose it is Ned's own fault that he's retarded, nor so I suppose that any of us would care to change places with him. However it does interfere with his skills as a publican.
Shame about Bobby his dad, the man made the best baked hams on the planet, and I used to live in Virginia where they pride themselves on baked hams.
Thanksgiving and Christman in Bkk aren't the same without a Tooms ham.

I'm not trying to pry, but why dont you patron Bourbon Street? If it's personal I dont want to know but if life threatening to the general public...??????? I've lodged there and eaten there, but i'm from Louisiana and realy enjoy those kind of groceries. Even though I can cook it better than what i've had there, I still enjoyed it.
