OK, I a arriving in BKK on Sunday night at 10:55PM.
I noticed before that if you head up to the departures floor to avoid the taxi arrivals mafia, preying on Americans and horny Australians, there are few/no taxis by the time you clear customs.
Do I have to pay 600 BAHT?...I mean its the same price as in My country but this offends my sensibilities...

just go to the normal taxi stand outside. queue there and wait until you get a metered taxi. that's all! no taxi mafia around except some people who will try to convince you to take a limousine.
by the way there is an extra thb 50 to be paid to the taxi driver, which is supposed to be his compensation for the wait in the airport taxi queue!

Tell the driver to take the tollway, extra 40 but well worth it in the time you will save. I always ask if anyone is going to Nana and do they want to share a cab.

I think you where right about going up to departures.
If you go up there you will get a taxi who has just dropped somebody of ( leaving bangkok).
It will be about 200bht plus about50-60 bht for the toll this will get you in the nana area, and you wont have to pay any extra.
I've never had a problem getting a taxi from the upstairs depatures. No queuing as well, just get straight in when they drop some one off.
I cant believe more people don't do this !!

hey don't share bkk biggest taxi secret with everyone! soon all the US/OZ guys will be waiting in line at dep.level as well in the lift up there with all there heavy bags!!!
only once had a problem getting a taxi to pty after midnight up there. he simply dropped me of a few km's down the rd at a taxi service place as he wasn't up for that 2h drive after all...

well most of these taxi guys at the departure know that it is no secret any more! it happened to me 3 times already that i got in those taxis who dropped of somebody and those bastards refused to turnon the meter, being fully aware that i hardly wouldn't get any other taxi somewhere on the express or motor way. always were going to negotiate a price of thb 300-400 + toll to downtown. was always a real hassle to get a different taxi on the high-way!
these bastards instead of being happy picking somebody up with no wait at the depature they start getting stupid. so in conclusion i rather queue and wait at the arrival taxis for getting a metered taxi without any hassle!

it is a bit of a hike, but if you really want to avoid all this..
go to term 1 .. find the flyover to the Amari Airport Hotel .. as you start over the street, look for the door on your right with stairs down to the street..
This is where the locals catch their taxis.. just insist "metre" .. I have had a few say no, but the next one says yes..
If you are late at night you don't even have to take the toll roads, but for B70 (assuming you take both) you will get there faster and it is only US$2
Make sure you have some Baht (exchange or ATM) at the airport ..

there's 2 possible toll fees':
1. the elevated tollway above the main rd north from din daeng extended further out than the airport. fee 30bt.
2. standard city express way fee 40bt. you get this from din daeng where the 30bt tollway ends. This is a good investment for virtually all downtown destinations unless you want to sit in traffic for some time...
Of course late at night might be an exception if 40bt is too steep for you 
Anyways meter fare from don muang to say nana via expressway is around 150bt only, so no matter if the taxi wants to use meter or not just inform him you don't wanna pay more than 200bt tops + tolls
Never had a problem except for the slight delay once to pty(change of taxies), but hey I'm an old cabbie myself, so I know all the tourists scams from both sides...
