Ok ok ok I know one guy who'll jump on me with both feet just for asking this question, but I have to ask it anyway. I see 'monger' used here by many of you guys to describe yourselves (including one guy I've had PM's with who seems quite all right, so I'm not bashing anyone). However I've always understood a 'monger' to be someone who SELLS something, not buys something (fishmonger, ironmonger etc). Checked it here to be sure about this http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=monger (originally meant someone who sells slaves it seems).
Presumably you're abbreviating 'whoremonger' which is basically a pimp rather than a customer. Can anyone explain to my why this term is used in this way concerning the nightlife scene in Thailand? I've even seen a sexy girl advertising her company on a Thailand personals site referring to guys there as 'mongers' so it seems to be a common (mis) use of the word. Any (polite) comments welcome, F.

I have often wondered myself, but the term has been about for at least 25 years so it's well and truly in the vernacular.
Not just in Thailand too - I heard it in Holland in the early 80's and it's a commom term here in Dubai.

Firstly whoremonger is not slang. It has been around for many years indeed and can be found in the works of Shakespeare.

As to it's exact etymology or if it was directly adapted from the word monger I don't know. Certainly in the definitions it can mean a pimp as well as a customer which is confusing.
However to suggest "whoremonger" or it's abbreviated form "monger" is incorrectly used when reffering to someone who uses the services of a prostitute based on the definition of "monger" is not true. You cannot rationalise the English language like that. We use so many words and statements everyday that do not make logical sense and give learners many headaches, but to us as fluent speakers they are not even considered.
For example you would say a cow and a sheep but when it becomes plural it's 2 cows and 2 sheep not 2 sheeps

Has f***-all to do with being a pimp.
Guys who consort with whores are "whoremongers".

Monger derives from the Latin /mango/ meaning a dealer or trader. This is a wider meaning in the exchange of goods and services in both directions than the more modern interpretation of monger (as used in ironmonger) which is closer to vendor (L. /vendere/ to sell).
Sexual mongers perhaps fancy themselves as trading sexual favours rather than simply purchasing them.

Looks like I learn something everyday on this forum. I simply thought that monger being short for whoremonger was essentially a joke or play on the term Warmonger.
Warmonger is a term that I have always associated with persons that have an unhealthy desire to make war as in they thrive on something that is inherently bad.
Thus if we refer to oursleves as Whoremongers it could mean that we thrive on supporting and cavorting with whores.
That is just what had been bouncing around in my head with no dictionary definition or Shakespearian heritage to support it.
