Like most I have pretty much been to most places in Bangkok, but the Sapan Kwai area sounds interesting and as yet is unvisited.
I know it is the bargain basement for nightlife, mainly thai clientelle etc. And I have heard rumours that many gogo girls start their careers here.
I've also heard a few people say it is really bad, and not worth a visit....... but I would like to see for myself.
Has anyone got anymore info ?

There has been movement recently to keep falangs out of this area. The local customers do not want to see their favorite seedy bars become a ghetto for fat balding falang in shorts and singlets.
I have heard that the boys heading this resistance have engaged hypershade and scobie as consultants.

I've been there tons of times, beginning in the late 80s and through early this year. The scene is not too different from the way it was way back then - very Thai, lots of motorcycle guys, some edge to it, and so on.
Perhaps not the best place to be walking around without your wits to you, but then again, I have never been bothered there.
It is a lowish end scene in terms of the income power of the Thai customers, but be forewarned, they will pour your beers fast and the bills can add up. The girls you sit with are often experts at milking the bill too.
Most (not all) of the places have some dancers and the girls sit with you. They are generally barfinable.
It is worth checking out for a change of pace. I have found the occasional gem there, but more than often not too much.
Back in the early 90s, several of the side streets off Suthisan were full-on brothels of the hardest core variety. I believe that side of the scene is gone now, though I have not checked.
To get to the bar section on the main road, coming from town go down Viphavadi, hang a left on Suthisan, and head down until around the Inthamara 1/ Suda Palace area. You'll see lots of bars to choose from.
