One from Stickman's mailbox...
On a recent night out in Bangkok I dropped by that bar / restaurant on the 63rd Floor of The State Tower. I call it 'that bar / restaurant' because it seems to have about three different names : 'Sirocco' or 'Mezzaluna' or 'Distil'. I mention it because this place took me a bit by surprise. It was about ten o'clock on a Saturday and the outside deck was closed because it was raining. Understandable. Seating inside however, including the bar stools were only available to those who had booked them. The wife and I stood by the window admiring the view of the city (which is impressive) and we ordered a glass of wine and a beer. For these two drinks we were charged the handsome total of 1,004 baht. After seeing the bill, the misses really needed to sit down! For a scary moment I thought we had been somehow transported back to some posers' wine bar in London's Covent Garden. Needless to say, we won't be making this a regular port of call.
A experience to be missed me thinks!!

Blimey; it isn't cheap, but it isn't expensive!
Well, ok, it can be expensive, but not that bad....
The complex = The Dome
The outdoor restaurant = Sirocco
Indoor Italian = Mezzaluna
Indoor bar = Distill
Function area upstairs
Yes, I think that is it.... Based on the drinks I seem to buy for the ladies at Resort from time to time, I think 1008b is remarkably cheap.
But of course, working and living here I don't earn the big cash you guys do living overseas.... so I have to make my money work. That's why all the notes are covered in lady's juices all the time; because they are working.

The food is so so nothing to run over. A drink is enough to look at the view. I eat there one time thats it never more but sure a drink some time to look at the view but not inside.

I agree that the food at Sirocco is good but definitely overpriced. However, the food in Mezzaluna is amazing. Very pricey but if you like sophisticated, modern Italian food, you cannot beat it (and in this town, that says a lot!)
You won't find FL's up there, but its definitely worth visiting once for the view.

Seriously guys, I've been to some nice bars high in the sky here back at home (Sydney - Oz) but for the life of me never had to pay around $35 (1000bht) for a wine & a beer. The point is,. you can somehow live with a round, but when your caught up in the moment, you'd like to kick back and get comfy & enjoy a few drinks after you've settled in. A few rounds for you & your lady at this joint could well pass 5,000 bht without a blink, and thats just drinks alone..

It is all relative to what you are use to. At least your drink was invested in your wife who you might f*** that night. A lot of us pay for girl drinks all the time and get nothing, but it is just part of the game.
1000 THB = 24 USD
24USD for two drinks is not that expensive for a high class place in the west...with no view

I'm with Baquawn on the price issue.
Besides Sirocco is one of my favourite bars in BKK. In the same area V9 in Sofitel is another cool bar/restaurant/club high up, better when it's windy or rainy as it's indoor and a much better deal on wines. Food in both places is nothing great though.
Hanging out late in a 3rd storey office feeding off cakes leftover of yesterday Kippur's celebrations my assistant brought a huge box of, I would love waking up sipping a few drinks lying in the couch of Sirocco.

I am also with Bawquawn; I live and work here; once in a while a few drinks are nice up there, and 5k is not that much to pay for drinks... resort, now that is a place that can wipe you out financially 
Jazz in sirroco is the outdoor part with live vocalist; not bad they change around the crew, sometimes quite bebop west coast sound, and (not that I have heard yet) descending into the lounge singer type sound at all.
Have had a few really talented pianists (or maybe it is the same guy) playing there; it gets lost a bit from being outside though.
Saxophone and those places; well it depends on who is playing at the time.... I've had a couple of trios play at the mall I work at that were just awesome; one from Bamboo Bar; one plays sometimes at Brown Sugar, one from somewhere else; all great but shows that it is a bit of luck as to who you get.
Haven't found Thelonius Monk/Bud Powell/Bird style jazz here yet, other than responding to the odd request.
