OLDHAND, Certainly prices in LOS for a soapy are reasonable. 1.5-3K is still a good deal cos quality and choices are pretty good. We can choose i.e. Sukhumvit, Petchburi and Ratchadaa MP depending on our budget. ÝFor people in a tight budget SWEETHEART at 800 TB or ANNIES (not VIP room) at 1K are always a good bet. Current rate 1USD=43TB THE MACHINE Prices in Patpong GG-bar were always "expensive". However, in Soi Cowboy and NEP an ST has been quoted these last 4 years 1-1.5K and an LT 1.5-2.5K depending on the girl and the GG-bar. Bar girls and freelancers are another Ýstory........

Yeah, and moon pies used to cost a nickel each, also. Prices go up, fellas. The idea is to keep your income going up at the same time. ;)

I paid almost $US2,000 for airfare and another US$1,000 for BGs, drinks, tips etc... and only sanook with about 5 girls in 3 days. I could have spend that much to sanook 30 selected beautiful oriental massage girls right here in California. Honestly, I've tried some Chinese Malaysia & Korea massage girl in San Jose & Los Angeles for only $100 and they look even better then the so call model in Poisedon. What I try to say is it is not that cheap after all expenses for those of us only go to BKK once a year for a few days. To me, the problem is I am from the Midwest where decent oriental massage girl is no avail. So, BKK is a better solution. Just my 2 cents.

ilovelos, Your figure for airfare seems very high. I paid 700 Euro in November and at the time dollar & euro were almost similar in value. Entertainment expenses seem to be on the generous side as well. I hope you had an enjoyable trip.

Breathless, don't forget that Europe is generally much closer to LOS than USA. ÝAlso we can get some pretty crap airfares from here depending on our point of origin. ÝIt's not regulated so pretty complicated. ÝCurrent flight cost from my point of the US, in low season, on off travel days, is about USD 850. ÝYMMV. ÝDefinitely have to value the overall package to justify, though.

On the original topic of 'Ruining Paradise': "You call someplace Paradise Kiss it goodbye..." - Don Henley, The Last Resort I have been thinking about this for a while. I don't think overpaying is much of a problem, and in fact, I really dislike those who get irate about punter 'x' paying too much, "Don't ruin it for the rest of us...", etc. I think the REAL problem is that there are two distinct groups who frequent this forum (and others). ÝThere are probably a million other ways to draw the diagram, but for now, let's consider the following two types: 1) The guy who loves Thailand and specifically, Thai girls, and 2) The dedicated sex-addict, for whom Thailand is just another place to get his rocks off. Notice that I have a bias here, and I make no pretense of fairness. ÝI will state up front that I don't care for #2, and that I belong to #1. Many of us #1 types have been involved in Thailand over the longer haul. Some have just discovered it, but we have one thing in common: we find the place charming. ÝWe LIKE the little hassles and pecularities that make life in Thailand a challenge. ÝWe don't WANT Thai versions of American or European (or wherever) women, food, music, culture. Members of group #2 couldn't care less about anything Thai, save that stuff is cheap. ÝCheap sex, cheap food, clothes, transportation. ÝAlso, all of this can be had without any real effort, thanks to the internet, cheap airfares, and FORUMS LIKE THIS. I have favorite restaurants, bars, massage parlors, parks, bungalows, etc., in Thailand. ÝWould I post them here? ÝNot on your life! ÝI would gladly meet up with anyone (in neutral territory), and depending on how I felt about them, recommend some of my good places. ÝI know that seems selfish, and not quite in the spirit of this type of venue, but that's the truth of it. So, you ask, what is the problem? ÝThis and other venues like it, by nature, reduce everything to the lowest common denominator. ÝAny goofball who gets tired of chasing crack whores up and down urban city streets here in the US, or being treated like the pieces of shit they are by high-priced Amsterdam tarts, can get from the internet everything he needs to make it to Nana Hotel for 270 baht (including 50 baht airport Taxi tax and tollways), clog up the works at the check-in desk, get the room on the better floor, and be in Angel Witch before it closes, ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! ÝI see them every time I travel, looking dazed at the thought of actually travelling to Adult Disneyland. ÝANYONE can do it! ÝNo skill, no appreciation of travel, no worldliness, no cultural awareness, just a pocketful of saved pocket change, and the notion that EVERYTHING is for sale. ÝAdd an unhealthy distrust of the people they are imposing on, paranoid to the point of haggling over 5 baht, for fear of being 'ripped-off', and you have a picture of an increasing percentage of arrivals at Don Muang. Before anyone gets too bent, I must say that THIS forum, specifically, has a ton of good folks, and seems not to attract type #2 too strongly. ÝBut the question was raised, and I have seen it before. I'd like to go back to the days when people got confused when you mentioned Thailand, and referred to the people as "Taiwanese". Ý20+ years ago, most folks couldn't find Thailand on a map, and Thai girls had no idea what 'short time' meant. ÝBut, failing the invention of a time machine, what is to be done? In the past, places that were 'discovered' were eventually declared passe, and the 'discoverers' moved on to the next hot spot. ÝLook at Bali, or Goa. ÝDecimated. ÝI hope people decide that Thailand is passe, before the inevitable backlash comes. ÝSigns of it are around already: early closings, anti-foreigner sentiment in the cabinet, student protest, etc. Don't get me started about the girls' attitudes! To say things have changed since the early eighties is weak. ÝTo be fair, not all is due to the presense of #2 types, but more accurately, globalization is responsible for the changes AND the presense of type #2. In closing, my slogan: Ý No more #2 in Thailand!! I thank you. haam sup polite comments appreciated

"Breathless, don't forget that Europe is generally much closer to LOS than Europe." Well, after a few minutes of differential calculus, I MUST disagree! Europe is DEFINITELY closer to Europe than LOS. Anyone who disagrees can meet me Afterskool. haam sup

Haam, The first thing I want to say about you post is I hope I someday have the chance to have a drink or two with you. I don't know how much we have in common but your post could almost have been written by me as it reflects my feelings almost precisely. I commend you both for the post and the attitude it reflects. It may not be seen as freindly by some and may be unwelcome to them; But I can really relate to it and I think more than selfishness it shows a lack of superficiality in you and your feelings for LOS --which seem to be of genuine regard and affection. I might have more to say on the OP later but I think it's mostly been said already in HS's post. Ý
