Strange.... some refer to a time 2 years ago as the gool old days. I came here for the first time in Jan. 97, and over the next five years -until mid 2001 came about 50 more times. Then I moved here. Besides closing times, I do not get the feeling of things having changed much since 97. Is it that perhaps I am getting old and 5-6 years is a ST to me now? Or could it be that my tastes have always been simple (though I got decent scores in the corruption tests  ) ? hmmmm... go figure!

The last 5 years? Not much has changed except one rather significant thing: 2AM CLOSING. But if one goes back far enough, there are some quite big differences.

Got here in '96. Not sure when I'll 'check out.'  Haven't really noticed much difference. These still are the good ol' days as far as I'm concerned. Pre-crackdown.... we partied till 5am at whatever club . Post-crackdown, we party till until 2am, then have a post party till dawn at various apartments/condos.
no problemas.

Never lived in LOS but for me the thing changes around 97 with all the Lady Boys in Patpong. Came due to work (mfg in Ayutthaya) since 93.

You ever get kids running to doorways and pointing while calling to thier friends "Falang! Falang!" as you pass?
The nice side of that is I'd have adults sitting at tables eating/drinking wave me over to sit down and join them. Which I often did. (That's basically how I started speaking Thai.)

a few month ago visited Bkk and the hotel where I used to stay in 77-78; Crown on Sukhumvit soi 29. and really... all was just the same... same dirty pool, same dingy, "drive in rooms for ST". Thou missing the three bars up on Sukhumvit front, as far as I remember "Butterly bar", "Our Place" and the third on the corner who´s name I forgot. Those were the days my friends.....

The first time I visited LOS was 1998. Everything was a new experience and therefore something special.
The trip in June 2001 I liked because I had more new experiences.
I left in July 2003 feeling jaded.
All is relative.

The "good old days" will start for me again 12/10 when I arrive in BKK. I never get tired of it. I always walk down Sukhumvit when I first arrive and regain the feel of the place - different, but basically the same.
I don't compare it to other times and trips because I never want to spoil it! There is just no replacement - it's too unique!
