I don't want to be stabbed, but you do realise that Thailand has the third highest number of murders by guns (per capita) in the world don't you?
The pen might be mightier than the sword, if not the blade, but the man with the gun and nothing to lose is likely to come off best.

Mark raises a good point - brandishing a knife in a country where people get killed by guns may not be the smartest thing to do - how does your knife keep you safe from a gun? My guess "Not at all".
I always found the best policy to be alert, and to walk away from locations that appear to be more trouble than they are worth.

I walk around that area frequently (whenever I am in BKK) and I never had any problems because it's a rather busy area.

It occured about 2 or 3AM. I had been drinking and when I drink I am a friendly drunk. The streets were still crowded and I crossed the street near Soi 12 near a footbridge and this LB stepped out in front of me and kept blocking my way. I am not interested in a confrontation so I stepped back and took the footbridge and the LB followed up top. I got very pissed and did confront the LB and he grabbed at my pocket and took 200 baht. I do not care about the money. After that I saw a BG I knew and she encouraged me to tell the police and then I saw another BG who had walked by earlier. I asked her if she had seen the LB and she said she did. She also encouraged me to go to the Police and the two BG went with me, in fact the one stated that the LB had hit her when she passed us and I had tried to start a conversation with her so as to distract the LB and be on my way. We all went to the Police Station and reported the event. While waiting for the Police a gang of LB's were coming toward us and then the police pulled up.
Perhaps, to some, I am a wemp? I have no interests in anything physical with an LB..I have not been in a fight since high school and do not see a need to fight to prove anything. Fighting is a last resort. I was in the Army, in fact was stationed 25 miles south of Pattaya for a year. I was willing to fight in that situation but was never called on to do that.
I am not interested in joining the Bangkok Fight Club as I am a small guy and am 51 and do not see myself as a potentially intimidating dude walking down the street.I will be much more careful next time and take precautions, I knew nothing about the footbridges before.
P.S. I do not go to Thailand to fight, I go there to EAT  !!
