The original question was about taking a taxi after 10 pm. Now if you wanna save some bucks then you can still ask the taxi driver to avoid toll. The traffic after 10 pm is not that heavy and you can enjoy the ride by watching around. the meter will still say 150-170 bht.

I ALWAYS go up to arrival.
never a hassle, usually new taxi. tip the 50 baht if he does a good job. the fare is 150 to 170. take the highway if there is traffic, additional 80 baht.

You mean up to DEPARTURES?
I USED to go up to departures. But since they got organized downstairs (no hassle now).... I happily pay the extra 50 Baht downstairs at ARRIVALS. A couple of times I have had to wait a few long minutes upstairs at DEPARTURES.

I agree with rtb, if I have small luggage always to departures...the taxi's at arrivals are just old and crap.
Always walk back to the entrance as the security will often nab them for the 50B if they wait near them.

I think they are much organised now in the arrival area. So why go up to departure and do something against the law. besides, it will only save you just 50 bht. I am satisfied witht he usual arrival kiosk lines.

Late in the evening, it has always been my custom to pick up a cab on the departures level at the airport. Never experienced a problem when I ask the taxi driver in Thai to use his/her meter as they appreciate not having to drive around the block to the arrivals level to pick up a fare.
