What makes you believe a Thai will tell you a 'Farang' what he/she 'really' thinks ?
He/she might lose face ?
They probably think you smell like a sewer but would never say !
They might tell you that early closing is a good thing because that is the answer they think you want to hear?
Or they may think that it is the current trend to agree with this policy and heaven forbid a Thai thinking for themselves. It's copy copy in Thailand. Any English teacher will tell you that ?
They might even think they may get in trouble if someone hears them critisizing a government policy or doing so by default by agreeing with a Farang !
Westerners live for many years in Thailand and still don't understand the Thais !
One of the reasons so many Farang-Thai relationships go wrong is because there is such a wide gap in culture and understanding of each other. At least that book 'Thai Fever' tries to bridge the gap that some say can never be bridged?

I've always thought that all these strange, constantly changing laws about closing times, will only increase the percentage of tourists in Thailand that are here purely for sex. I mean, most guys at Nana or wherever don't care that much about closing times, they just want to get laid.
But some of my friends in their twenties came here a few months ago, not interested in sex tourism at all, and they thought Thailand sucked. They are not coming back, because they found it boring. The beaches are nice, but there are nice beaches everwhere. They went home thinking the only reason to come here is to screw hookers.

A couple of years back a few people asked me whether I would visit Thailand if there was no sex scene? Just visit for the sake of it ?
My first thoughts were of course I would still visit.
Then I thought of a Thailand that had become Muslim and was like Malaysia. No naughty stuff !
Then I thought what if the bars all closed at 11pm.
Thailand still had very good hotels at reasonable rates.
Interesting food and errr umm and beer ! Beer ? Well I can think of a few ales I'd prefer to Singha.
Yet all is not lost Thailand has lovely beaches, so have other countries, but I get bored of the beach after a couple of days.
Right then no sex ! Errrrr uuummm ???? Errrr. Traditional massage ! Yes that's it! Traditional massage ! Yawn.
Italian restaurants? No they are better in Italy and Italy has beautiful lakes and Piazzas where you can drink coffee,wine and watch the posing mad Italians making a lot of noise. It also has Italian Opera ! Lamborghinis !
Then I started thinking about Cape Town, Luxor with the Valley of the Kings, Greece, Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza, the unspoilt Cuba with its three hundred beaches and fantastic music.
Prague with its beer. Portugal with the wine and sea food. The Ramblas in Barcelona. Austrian mountains. French food along the Cote D'Azur.
Thailand is a bargain for good hotels, apart from that it is a sex shop with middle aged men (like myself) in badly fitting shorts and singlets believing they are in heaven and all the girls really love them?
Without the sex what do you have left ?
