Hi,

1. At night watch out for taxi drivers who take your 500 baht note (for a fare of 140 baht) and then claim that you only gave them a 100 baht note. (they pull all 100's out of their top pocket to show you). Bastard!

2. Watch out for taxi drivers who are eager to offer to take you home via the "express way" route. One taxi driver offered me this as we drove off and I simply cut to the chase and asked how much it would cost. When he said 300 baht (normally 120 baht on all my previous trips) i told him to stop and I caught another taxi. Bastard!

Mostly the problem taxi drivers are the ones that are part of one of the 'taxi mafias' in front of Patpong, or in front of the Nana Hotel, the Imperial Queens Park etc.

So don't use them. If you aren't sure, ask before you get in if the fare will be meter or not, and if it's not, don't get in.

There are good radio taxis that you can call to pick you up and they charge just 20 baht over the meter for the service. My wife and I use them religiously.

The scam about taking a 500 or 1000 and then claiming it was a smaller bill, is not unique to taxis. According to a letter to the editor in Bangkok POST, one of the (now defunct) booths for exit tax at Don Muang was doing same thing.

Only cure for this and the infamous 'no change' scam is to carry wads of 20 and 50 baht bills.

The way to avoid the Patpong taxi mafia is to walk down far enough to get past them and then hail a regular meter taxi. Arguing with them does no good. The fix is in with the cops (what else is new?)

Easier at Nana, as there are fewer of them.

Also beware of the kind hearted-taxi driver that will take you where ever you want to go, such as a ladyboy show and then when you arrive expect you to pay for him to come inside.  This happend to us, I don't know how we got out of it but we did, and he still waited for us for an hour.  Nice guy, but he's a little nutty.

Although Thailand is a very safe place we better be a bit aware of these issues with the cabs....You guys better request for the taxi meter service ALL the times BEFORE sitting in the car "....Sawadee....meter na krap?....". That's enough. If you get questions like "....Where you go? B/. 200 ok?...." Just close the f_cking door and wait for another taxi....I saw this many times at Asoke/Soi Cowboy, Patpong, MBK (day-time)and Siam Square close to CM2 (night time).

I think it also should be also a NORM for all of us to check the meter GOING ON since the very beggining of the ride. If you are at home/apartment/etc. Take the radio taxi and pay your extra-20 baht. Better be safe than sorry.

If you are leaving from crowded joints skip the ones parking in there and take the ones passing by. This place is bloody safe but sometimes SHIT HAPPENS....

By and large most Taxis are OK, I dont like to take stationary ones, ones waiting outside Hotels etc, often have had the meter running, but just hop in and be sure the meter is on and showing 35 baht, also make sure he is confident about where you want to go - make sure you have small notes [20 bts ] as the will always say the dont have change - if this does happen, then get out of a cab and go to a 7/11 or something for change - they won't argue, sometimes they wont take you as their time for cab hire is nearly up [ usually hired out in 12 hour shifts]  - also I like to wait for the new, slightly larger cab that are now on the streets. More comfortable, same price. Another tip is to try and sort out beforehand how /where your going, as many streets are one way, often you can save alot of time and money by crossing a road to get a cab- who otherwise spends 10-20 mins going along before he can make a U turn -   But as mentioned, by and large pretty safe, you of course will always get the odd one who will try to put one over the farang, but not often.

Is that sentence spoken as it's written?  I mean can I screw it up (unwittingly) and insult the taxi driver?

It would sure be nice to actually say something to the taxi-driver instead of pointing aimlessly at the meter and smiling like a moron which is my usual s.o.p.
