Been reading some of his old weekly stuff, and got to a bit where he said the girls and night life aint what it used to be, and the girls don't look as good. Have a day off thats the typical thing said by someone whos been here 2-3 years. The girls look just as good as they've always done, it just makes you look like you know what you're on about if you say they don't. Just imagine going out with him for a night. Moaning about how good it was in the 'old' days of 3 years ago, must have been bloody unbalieveable 20 years ago then.
Where ever you go in the world it's never as good as the fist time, but in reality it's just the same. I'd say the only bad thing now about the nightlife is the 2am closing and thats it.
Everybody out there take no notice of his stuff and just have a good time, your in the right place.

I would agree with you, 30 years ago, southeast asia was bloody unbelieveable. I was stationed in Saigon with the US Army and I was 26, I was paid more money then I knew what to do with and I didn't need viagra. The girls were just as friendly and mercenary as the Thai girls are.

Things WERE much better 10-15 years ago and at that time the old hands said that it WAS better 10-15 years before that.
I can see the physical decline of the bar premises where owners have done no upkeep.
I can see and feel the decline in quality of attitude among the BGs, often anyway.
But in general I see the same decline in good attitude by everyone in Bangkok so it isn't just the BGs and bar scene.
When I had been here 2-3 years I did NOT make the same comments that stickman is making, and I echo your own remarks to the effect that he is apeing the attitude of old hands and trying to seem cooler than he is.

Personally I prefer the Bangkok of today and the Phuket of 10 years ago.
As far as the girls goÖI think there are just so many more bars than there were 10-15 years ago that the number of good looking girls is more diluted. I persoally never find more than 2 or 3 in any establishment that turn my head.....unfortunately I cannot remember thenumber before...but I'm sure it was higher...or was I hornier?

I certainly believe there's a large element of one-upmanship involved, designed to make the newbie feel both naive and deprived.

Of course, you only have to stay here a short time to start becoming ridiculously picky about women. But that's you, not the women.
The only thing I'm pretty sure of about the BGs of today is that taller ones are a lot thicker on the ground than 10 years ago. I suspect that in another 10 years, the peanut will have become a threatened species.

I'd bet there were just as many stunners before. Wherever you go in the world there is always someone trying to tell you it was better before, rose tinted glasses. I've always tried to avoid this. If there was always someone who 'knew it when it was better' there is simply never going to be a best time to go. You could take this so far back that you would have had to be present at the start of civalization, the big bang, so know one was there to say , "well last year it was better" Although I bet some bloody bacteria would have told you, even then. I think I'm going on a bit.

- think without doubt, its always better the first time - and obviously the longer you stay here, the more cynical, and the more "picky" you become, re TGs, - I shudder to think at some of the desperates I swooped on when I was first here, - as to the possible extinction of the "peanuts" ... heaven forbid, they are my favs! - as to numbers, certainly more around these days, than 10-15 years ago - when walking up sukhumvit you saw maybe 2 or 3 Katoeys, apart from a huge influx around the old Thermae, but that would only be on about a par with the Grace at 2am+ these days - and one thing for sure, certainly more better sorts out and about in MBK/Siam square these days, certainly see a number every day I rate as top class - even if I haven't got the urge to race after them anymore !

As I said I think the number of good looking girls is about the same....just diluted over the greater number of bars...I also I also think fashions change...we get older...the bar girls change as people and stay the same age...maybe we just don't relate to a 20 year old as we did when we were closer to that age........one example for me is I don't like them with tattoo's...particularly on their breasts......I hate tattooed breasts....the only tattoo's I really like are the ones across the small of the back.....I would also feel a total twat walking along with a girl in shoes with 4 inch soles.....so when you relate to the girls who are 30+...who are maybe not so cute....you perceive this as the standard as having dropped.
