Spent Loy Karthong last year in Ayuthaya at the Royal River Hotel. It was a great experience and Ayuthaya is a fantastic old city to explore. However, make sure you do have female company as their are no beer bars to speak of, just a few karaoke & massage places catering for the local crowd.

My TGF and I did Loy Krathong at the park next to the Emporium by the Phrom Phong BTS stop. However, we'd bought the banana leaf boat over at the Chao Praya river under the Saphan Taksin BTS stop. The carnival atmosphere there was fun, and they had loads of really pretty "krathongs" that were being made as we watched. We also caught the procession of ships steaming up the river near sunset, all decked out in lights and colors, pretty neat.
But we decided not to lauch at the Chao Praya, as there were too many people and the ones being launched were getting trashed before they got very far "out to sea." So we hopped the Skytrain back to the Emporium, and walked down to the little lake in the park there. it was really nice, actually very quiet, as people took turns at the water's edge silently wishing their little boats off. My TGF managed to light the little flags on fire on ours, lol, and fortunately not burn up her hair in the process. After that conflagration, we lit the insense and candles and set it off. Really a sweet and memorable moment to see it drift out into the lake with all the other colorful little boats.
Then we headed over to Soi Cowboy for Thanksgiving dinner (my idea, lol!) and noticed the ladies on the soi were charging the punters to lauch little boats in minature inflatable swimming pools out front of the bars. Some of the ladies were dressed in traditional Thai garb. Needless to say, the sight of all this on the soi helped to aid my digestion.

Know what you mean about the karaoke girls in Ayuthaya. Had mixed experiences myself, the best being with a girl who was so non hardened it was a total tender gf experience. The flipside is, that cos these places don't really cater for the farang, some girls won't go with you for any money cos their colleagues tease them for going with a smelly farang ! Thais can be very cruel.

I have only been to one LK festival and that was in Chiang Mai last year.
ALl I can say is WOW!! Them folks know how to rock CM!!
Huge parades and fireworks going the hell off everywhere. The Thais I was hangin with were telling me that CM gets into LK more than any other location in LOS.
I cannot confirm this but I cant imagine any place goin off more than they do up there..

I agree..Chiang Mai is a great place to be for this festival..the sky is filled with lighted baloons and the river area one big party..highly reccomend you to get out of Bangkok and go there..
