Many times Thais will bring a smile to my face when they try and get more money out of the falong.
Last week I had a reservation with conformation number at the Majestic Suites. I show up at the time I told them I would arrive and the sweet looking young desk clerk ask me if I would like an upgrade for 700 baht. I could tell by looking at her that they had sold my room and where trying to get more money out of me. I smiled and told her no that I'm more then happy with the room I reserved. She calls Bob the manager and told him cheap Charley wouldn't bite and he tells her to give me the upgrade for free. Cheap Charley loves free upgrades.

This happens a lot in the USA as well especially with car rental cars only it is the hard sell to get you to upgrade and after refusing you find yourself in the Jag they were trying so hard for you to pay for.
I guess this is one of the differences in 5-star hotels. When this happens they just ask you "Sir we have run out of standard rooms, so can we put you in one of our suites at no extra charge?"
Now you would think no one would have a problem with this right? Wrong, one of my business ASSociates complained that the room was too big and switched to a smaller room the next day. What a moron!

Worse case scenario is when a hotel goes in overbooking and they "reprotect" the clients to another hotel....few times you are lucky cuz they book you a higher category, most of the times it sucks cuz they send you to a lower category......and you have no way around it cuz you do need a room and then you can start complaining....
I saw this happening at the Shangri-la couple of weeks ago....twas a group of US seniors, 12 of'em, they had to accept to move to the Sofitel Silom.....and the only thing they had as plus twas an apology from a junior sales manager and a free buffett dinner before leaving.....

TU is right, this has nothing to do with them being Thai and you being falang. This happens all the time at Alamo rent-a-car and other locations in the USA.
BigD, from your past few posts, sounds like the magic of Thailand is wearing off lately?? Wrong??

I'm back in the USA. I would have loved to take you up on the bar fine.
I'm not sour on LOS. I just see the irony involved with Thai dealing with falong customer. As a repeat customer MJ should have offered the upgrade for free.
Back in the day when I traveled in the US more. Budget car rental would always upgrade me for free same with Sheraton hotels. I was such a good customer, I didn't even have to ask.

I just checked-in MS 2 nights ago, just before 1 AM, and was also told they were upgrading me, but without asking for more. You must look like money bags man, 'cause I arrived wearing a suit.
I am also a repeat customer. They said it is a double superior, but looks the same size with a bigger bathroom.
