The secret of the manhatton is that it is the best deal in town. It should not even be compared to the town lodge, they are totally different, no comparison what so ever.
I'm supprised TPE made such a rash statement right away without even addressing the question, or investigating as to what impressed you about the manhatton, and to give you some straight answers to your concerns. I guess that is why everyone considers his remark just spam.
Now to your question. The manhatton is an older hotel, but the rooms are adequate with everything clean, and comfortable. A BG would not feel embarrasssed being taken there, but make sure you book a double.
When you get there make sure they give you a room on the entrance side, or soi side of the hotel. The noise from the construction next to the hotel can be bad, but not to everyone.
They have most of the desired amenities, nice sized rooms, big in-room safe, stocked fridge, plenty of hot water, big enough showers for 3, adjustable a/c, pool with spa, and inhouse massage, a well priced tour desk, don't use the one outside the entrance door, use the desk next to the elevator, a small business center, and close to the asoke BTS, and MRT station. The morning breakfast buffet is real good. Maid service is very attentive. Robinsons department store is a block away with a good money changer.
This is my 3rd time staying there. I tryed the swiss grottino once. It's a nice small new hotel, but unless your sole purpose is to show off the nicely done up bed, there is no comparison.
I would have tried the town lodge this trip, but I couldn't get a straight answer as to how far from sukhumvit the end of soi 18 is. I have a bad hip, so the walking distance is a big concern. I guess the tuk tuk will take me out to the street, but will it pick me up from the BTS stop to go back to the hotel, and is it available at all hours.
At bt1000 a night, you will not find a another hotel at this price that has as many of the desired amenities as the manhatton. Some ppl might not like the fact that it is a very popular hotel for families, but it's girl friendly if you book a double, and it's nice enough for families to be repeat customers.
I always like the looks on the family men with their wives at breakfast when I walk in with my bodyguards, talk about envy..............lol.

Saeed, I have sent u a PM before koolbreez posted his FR. What koolbreez has to say does not differ with my opinion. Somehow I do like Manhattan. I have stayed there in my the last 5 trips in 4 years time.
Of course the ultimate decision is yours.

The end of soi 18 may be too far for you then. I think that comments in the Town Lodge thread that is 5 minutes by foot is a bit exaggerated unless one walks quite fast.
The other concern I have about soi 18 is safety at night. Soi 18 is one of the nicest sois in BKK with lots of trees, and very few small shops. Consequently, it is fairly dark at night, without a lot of other people on the streets at night.
Also, when you reach Sukhumvit, the closest BTS stop is Asoke, but you have cross over Asoke on foot to get there. That is one of the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in BKK because it is so wide and so packed with traffic. Waits for traffic lights can be close to 10 minutes.
