It is my experience and the reputation. When I first went to BKK, it was on business and I was a greenhorn. I read in some travel book the Grace was "the sex hotel" of BKK. True, but it is alot more. The fact that I stayed there made my Thai counterparts lose face just by picking me up there. Boy, what a lesson. Live and learn. Having said all this as a patriotic American and hardcore Jewish Zionist, the place has alot of flavor (literally) and character, just be careful. I've not been there since 9-11 so I do not know if things have change. The food is awesome and I do take most of my meals there. Besides, the place is crawling with mossad agents and every know and then the Thai Navy police come in round up a bunch of Abduls for deportation.

No doubt others will chime in but let me tell you that the Grace began that trend at least 20 years ago and has long been known for that. ÝWhen you get here and go to Nana, you can cross the road and find that it is a small "Arabtown" - a section where the businesses cater almost exclusively to people of the middle east (or Africans who I assume are there for the Islamic- freindly atmosphere.). Ý
BTW I've been in the vicintiy since 9/11 and I doubt whether there would be any actual danger for Americans.

Well Airbus I'm not so sure that it's being intolerant maybe just practical. I think that given the strained relationships with the various governments plus the fact that it is not unknown that some poor bastard unwittingly becomes the focal point for hate or reprisals simply because he is from somewhere, it just makes good sense to avoid places that cater to folks that might not be to pleased with your country. Here in the US they have spent considerable time on TV and elsewhere trying to teach the morons here not to simply lump all people in a single catagory just because of their looks or backgorund. There are morons everywhere and you can't train them all to be reasonable people. n Perfect example is the truck driver in Los Angeles that got the shit beat out of him during the riots because he was white or the hate crimes against blacks for jews or you name it......like I said, morons everywhere and no place to hide.

Low rent Arabs and Nigerian con men and heroin dealers. What a wonderful hotel. The Grace isn't the only hotel in town that caters to Moslems but it is by FAR the sleaziest.
NOT recommended. As we gear up to smack Saddam again the surliness of the Arabs at the Grace is just going to increase.
Bangkok's expat population includes a lot of guys who work in the Mideast and know the societies well (they spend most of their time there.) Very few of those that I am acquainted with would give you the price of the powder to blow them all away. Don't get on your high horse about Americans. Obviously it wasn't YOUR country, whatever pitiful flyspeck that might be, that had three jetliners crashed into its buildings and 3000 of its people -- and people from several dozen other nations -- killed gratuitously by terrorist scum that we Americans are now busily hunting down all over the globe and exterminating like the vermin they are.

Breathless, the short answer to your direct to the point question about Soi 3 Sukhumvit is NO, the girls who work the streets and the beer bars on Soi 3 tend to be older, smellier skanks who specialize in the riffraff clientele on that soi.
And Griffin, as viable alternatives to the late night scene at the (ugh) Grace, how about the Nana Hotel coffee shop, the Thermae, and the Siam Hotel coffee shop? Admittedly if those places aren't sleazy enough then the Grace beckons.
But not to me, and I do live here.
