Thanks for the update on the Amari hotel chain. Just another reason why NOT to stay at that hotel. Seems like the've gone from not being guest friendly, to really not being guest friendly.
I have used planetholiday.com to book my hotel stays at a couple different hotels. The Novotel Lotus was kind enough and professional enough to extend my stay at their hotel for the same internet price that I paid. But ..... I know that this is not standard for them or any other hotel.
My suggestion is that if for anyone using the internet to try to nail down the exact number of days they will need the hotel room for. This will save you some time in the future for extending your stay. If you do need to extend and the hotel will not give you the same interent rate, go to an internet cafe and then rebook for the extra nights. I've also done this. Same day, used the internet in my room and booked the hotel room online again. Then walked down and said you have a reservation for (give them my name) and ask them for the same room I am in!! ha ha ha ha!! It worked, just took a lilttle bit of time.

I think siam-online.net is a good service. You are not required to make any payment until 14 days before your arrival at the hotel. By then you should know if your going or not. And their rates are pretty competitive with the other companys. I have used them a few times and never had any probs.

What I was trying to explain was with regard to "leaving" for a few days etc rather than actually turning up. I'm usually in BKK for 10 - 14 days so I "book" in to PP for 14 days. Like most hotels they don't charge you nayhting until I LEAVE so if I've "popped down" to Phuket for a week they don't chareg me for nights I've not stayed there. My understanding of the Internet Bookings is that you book for 14 days, pay in advance and if you only sleep there for 7 days you still end up paying for the full 14

whitespider is correct. i checked with the amari group and they confirm that they do charge a deposit of baht 2000 a day even if the room has been prepaid.
this only applies if the guest does not have a credit card.
looks like some of the booking agencies are defaulting in paying the hotels.
thanks for the info whitespider, care is required here with internet bookings.

I have booked directly with the hotels in the past, via their web-pages. Is there any advantage in booking via any the internet agents reffered to above?

yes, many times the agencies are a lot cheaper than direct internet booking with the hotel.

Just be sure that you compare apples to apples. It can sometimes get confusing with service charges,VAT,breakfast,a/p pick up etc. Add up everything and then look at the bottom line.

I usally travel in the slow season except my next trip 1 Dec thru 11 Dec. I will find the lowest price the hotel offers and then I will email the manager and offer around 50% off. I usally stay around 15 days this is considered a long stay. Managers love long stays almost as much B/G love you to "sponser" them I will send out maybe 10 to 15 emails and I will get a fair number of positive respones offering 40% or a little less. Then I take my pick. This only works in the off season. Looks like I have to pay full boat on this trip.
