The so called "GP" is actually the President Grand on Soi 11 Sukhumvit behind the shitty Ambassador. I don't know why people insist on reversing the name. This causes a lot of confusion with the (Sheraton) Grand Sukhumvit. The President Grand is a good midrange hotel, part of the President Park group of mostly serviced apartments. I believe they are in the 1700-1900 baht range.

Sorry Sauron, but all the people you are complaining about are right. It is the Grand President, unless the owners also have it wrong. http://www.presidentpark.com/grand.html

Sauron, you are mistaken. It is definitely the 'Grand President'. That is what is says on my keycard, on my contract, & also on the front of the hotel! dthomasss: The first time I came here, I just went into the sales office (tower 2), & asked one of the sales girls to show me a topaz room. After she'd shown me the room, she offered me a deal of 25,000 Baht for 1 month (I didn't even ask her for a discount the first time). I also have to pay the extra 10% tax when I check out. Also, this price doesn't include breakfast, but that doesn't bother me at all. Have only had breakfast once ever at the GP, it was fairly crap, & I was charged 150.01 Baht (i.e. 150 Baht + 1 satang), & they would not accept 150 Baht!!! Gullivers is just round the corner for a much better breakfast.....

It is actually a serviced apartment. But there should be a list soon. http://www.presidentpark.com/grand.html Note: GP (Grand President) is on Sukhumvit Soi 11, whilst PP (President Park) is on Sukhumvit Soi 24. They are both managed by the President group.

The Grand President has had its best days. Their prices have been going up, they have 'invented' the service charge and the rooms are 'going down'. They take credit cards only at an extra charge, very un-pleasant for a business traveler. I have visited them for 8 years and I am now done with them. Sorry bros for spilling my guts, but I feel better now.

Hi Byron, I have to agree with most of your points (CC, service charge, rooms slowly going down) - what's your alternative hotel? Any better solution in this price bracket (1600-2000)? It would need to have a decent gym, pool, restaurant, bar. Large mirrors like in the GP's Topaz are also nice to have.. Cheers, Fritz

The GP seems to be testing the waters to see how high they can go. First the base rate increase and now the pricing strategy that adds a 10% service charge that was previously included in the rate. I also recently noticed that they are not now available (at least for the time frames I was looking for) through many of the discount travel agencies.

Just a quick follow on-what are some alternatives for a very guest friendly place with a "respectable" name? Respectable from the perspective of having local business associates come to pick you up in the morning for the day's work activities. Some where with middle of the road pricing. Certainly the JW Marriott and Conrad fit the guest friendly and respectablity tag,but the price tags are up in the $125/night range.

Re GP rates; I got the following rates by E.Mail enquiry for Topaz Suites. Daily: 1800 less 20% TSM discount. 10% surcharge on room and other services. i.e. 1584 baht Weekly: 10500 =9240baht after adjustment. I paid 7600 baht weekly last 2 visits so they are really hiking the price up. I have to admit however I like the place and it has good facilities. On the one hand I can book somewhere else for a night or two and negoiate face to face as has been suggested earlier in the thread. Between the SARS scare and low season it should not be too difficult to beat them down in price. On the other hand the Euro has appreciated considerably since my last visit so the extra pain is minimal. Decisions,Decisions.
